Kowalchuk Places Second Javelin For Second Straight Year


         
         

RICHMOND, VA -- Senior Jon DiNozzi (Fox Lane, NY/Middletown, NY) became the first University of Delaware track and field athlete to win a conference title in a field event as he captured the pole vault at the first day of the Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Sports Backers Stadium.

DiNozzi's winning vault of 15-9 helped the Delaware men take a second place finish behind William & Mary after the first day of the championships. The Blue Hen women are currently sixth. The second and final day of the championships will begin Saturday morning.

The William & Mary men gained 87 points to take the first day lead followed by Delaware (50), UNC Wilmington, Towson, Virginia Commonwealth, James Madison, and George Mason in the seven-team field. The Tribe women also took the first day team lead with 60 points, outdistancing UNC Wilmington, James Madison, George Mason, Towson, Delaware, and Virginia Commonwealth.

The Delaware men posted seven top five finishes led by DiNozzi, who placed second a year ago during the Hens' first season in the CAA. DiNozzi also won the America East outdoor pole vault title in 2001.

Mike Sadowsky (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) placed second in the 10,000 meters (31:21.6), Shawn Watkins (Indian River/Frankford, DE) was second in the javelin (175-5), Mike Yost (Lake Forest/Felton, DE) was third in the hammer (167-3), Nick Riordan (Skaneateles/Skaneateles, NY) placed third in the long jump (21-4), Scott Armstrong (Sayreville War/South Amboy, NJ) was fifth in the javelin (159-11), and Dennis Spence (Caesar Rodney/Magnolia, DE) was fifth in the long jump (20-9).

For the Delaware women, Christine Kowalchuk (Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg, NJ) was second in the javelin for the second straight year with a toss of 121-1, Elizabeth Russell (Red Bank Regional/Little Silver, NJ) was fourth in the heptathalon (2,426 points), Jessica Urbonas (Rockville/Vernon, CT) was fifth in the javelin for the second straight year (110-4), and Casey Bennett (Shelton/Shelton, CT) was sixth in the pole vault (9-6 1/4).
