COLLEGE PARK, MD - University of
Delaware athletes captured seven first place finishes,
including six by the Blue Hen men, to highlight the
University of Maryland Outdoor Track and Field Invitational
Saturday afternoon.
The host Terrapins captured the team
title for both men and women, gaining 183.5 points in the
women's meet to outdistance Navy (142) and 159 points in the
men's section to outlast Delaware (125.5). A total of 12
teams took part in the women's section with Delaware earning
a fourth place finish. A total of 11 teams competed on the
men's side.
Taking home first place finishes for the
Blue Hen men were Fred DePalma (Penns Grove/Salem,
NJ) in the javelin (167-2 1/2), Mike Goodhart
(Warwick/Lititz, PA) in the hammer (177-5 - third best in UD
history), Mike Yost (Lake Forest/Felton, DE) in the
discus (140-7), Isaac Wolkowicz (Newark/Newark, DE)
in the shot put (48-2 3/4), Kevin Kelly (Malvern
Prep/Springfield, PA) in the pole vault (13-5 3/4), and
Pat Riley (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) in the 5,000 meters
(14:54.95).
Yost also placed third in the shot put
(45-7 3/4) and fourth in the hammer (1354-7) while Wolkowicz
was second in the discus ( (139-8 1/2).
Highlighting the Delaware women was
senior Aimee Alexander (Carmel/Stormville, NY), who
won the 5,000 meter race in a time of 17:26.90, and Kate
Klim (Barnstable/Cummaquid, MA), who placed fourth in
the 3,000 meter steeplechase but set a school record with a
time of 12:17.88.
Also for the UD men, Dave Finneran
(Rutherford/Rutherford, NJ) was third in the 3,000 meter
steeplechase (10:16.85) and Greg Barker (West/Cherry
Hill, NJ) was third in the discus (136-10).
Also for the UD women, Diethra
Seymour (A.I. duPont/Wilmington, DE) was second in the
hammer (151 1/2), Christine Kowalchuk
(Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg, NJ) was third in the javelin
(115-10), Erin Gemmill (Penn Manor/Lancaster, PA) was
third in the 1,500 meters (4:51.86), Jennie Chiller
(Sharon/Sharon, MA) was fourth in the hammer (147-11),
and Sarah Bochet (Trumbull/Trumbull, CT) was fourth
in the 400 meter hurdles. Jess Urbonas
(Rockville/Vernon, CT) was sixth in both the discus (112-0)
and in the javelin (104-9).
Both Delaware teams will return home to
host the Delaware Invitational at the Delaware Mini-Stadium
Track April 13.
