Hens
ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The University of
Delaware men's and women's outdoor track and field teams
opened the spring season with fifth place finishes at the
Navy Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Host Navy won the men's section with 216
points, besting Ohio University, Maine, Colgate, and
Delaware in the five-team field. Ohio University captured
the women's section with 209 points, outdistancing runner-up
Navy, Maine, Colgate, and Delaware in the five-team
field.
For the Delaware women, sophomore
Melissa Calvanico (Tottenville/Staten Island, NY) was
second in the shot put (37-7 3/4), senior Carol
Oliveri (St. Rose/Brick, NJ) was second in the pole
vault (10-6), junior Aimee Alexander
(Carmel/Stormville, NY) was second in the 5,000 meters
(17:36.60), sophomore Michelle Perno (Parkland,
Pa./Bear, DE) was third in the discus (126-2), and senior
Jen Lublanecki (West Morris Central/Long Valley, NJ)
was third in the 200 meters in 25.70.
The Blue Hen men had two individual
champions as sophomore Ben Thuma (Northern
York/Harrisburg, PA) won the discus throw with a toss of
163-2 and senior Sam Yarrington (Quaker
Valley/Sewickley, PA) captured the hammer competition with a
throw of 172-10.
Also for the Delaware men, sophomore
Pat Riley (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) placed third in the
5,000 meters (15:00.60), sophomore Mike Sadowsky
(Concord/Wilmington, DE) was fourth in the 5,000 meters
(15:21.20), junior Fred DePalma (Penn Grove/Salem,
NJ) was fourth in the javelin (170-3), and freshman
Michael Murphy (Salesianum/Wilmington, DE) was fourth
in the triple jump (37 1/4).
Both University of Delaware teams will
continue action next weekend at the Raleigh Relays at North
Carolina State University.
