A senior from Willingboro, NJ (Holy Cross High School), Quant (at right) was the Blue Hens’ lone competitor at the meet, which closed out the 2007-08 athletics season at the University of Delaware.
Quant, who earlier this year placed fourth at the ECAC Championships and seventh at the Colonial Athletic Association meet, was among 30 competitors at the NCAA East Regional. She became the first UD student-athlete to compete at the regionals since pole vaulter Casey Bennett in 2005.
After fouling on her first attempt Friday, Quant posted a leap of 16-feet, 8 3/4-inches on her second attempt and finished with distance of 18-feet, 1-inch on her final attempt. The leap of 18-feet, 1-inch was shy of her UD school record of 19-feet, 11 1/2-inches.
Junior Natasha Harvey won the event with a leap of 21-feet, 2 3/4-inches and was followed by teammate Shaquania Lundy (21-0). Cornell’s Jeomi Maduka was third (20-1 1/2), Gayle Hunter of Penn State was fourth (20-1), and DeMiracle Washington of North Carolina State (19-11 1/2) was fifth. All five now qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held June 11-14 at Drake University in Des Moines, IA.
Also an outstanding sprinter, she also placed third in the 4 x 400 meter relay, sixth in the 4 x 100 meter relay, and 11th in both the 100 and 200 meter dash events. At the ECAC this past weekend, she also placed 10th in the 4 x 100 meter relay and 27th in the 4 x 400 meter relay.
She holds Delaware records in the indoor long jump and 4 x 400 meter relay and in the outdoor long jump, 4 x 100 meter relay, 4 x 200 meter relay, and 4 x 400 meter relay.
