WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams combined for six top 10 finishes, including eight by the Blue Hen women, to highlight the first day of the 43rd annual Colonial Relays hosted by the College of William & Mary Friday.
The Delaware women, who were led by third place finishes from Cristine Marquez in the 200 meters (24.49) and from Asha Quant (at right) in the long jump (19-2 3/4), collected 14 points and were tied for 14th in the team standings. The Delaware men did not score a point but received eighth place finishes from Will Jurkowski in the 800 meters (1:55.32) and from John Viotto in the shot put (49-4 1/2).
The second and final day of the meet will begin Saturday morning. Members of the UD men’s and women’s track teams will also be competing at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational all day Saturday.
Marquez and Quant each enjoyed successful days for the UD women. Marquez was second in the 200 meters with the second best time in UD history and also placed fifth in the 400 meters (56.39) while Quant was third in the long jump, fourth in the 100 meter preliminaries (career-best 12.15), and eighth in the 200 meters (career-best 24.94). She will compete in the 100 meter finals on Saturday.
Also posting top finishes for the Delaware women were Kayla Hennessy placing sixth in the 100 meter hurdles preliminaries (14.7) and 15th in the 200 meters (25.23), Leah Putman placing 14th in both the 100 meter hurdles (15.18) and long jump (17-9 1/2), Alex Francis finishing 15th in the javelin (95-1), Julia Somers placing 19th in the 5,000 meters (18:21.26), and Kellyn Wright finishing 20th in the 800 meters (2:19.17).
Also for the Delaware men, Chase Renoll was 11th in the shot put (49-2 3/4), Andrew Lynch was 12th in the shot put (47-8), Nick Alexander was 16th in the shot put (45-7 3/4), and Brad Dodson was 17th in the 5,000 meters (15:15.14).
William & Mary took the team lead in both meets, earning 68 points to outdistance second place Seton Hall (42) on the women’s side and gaining 60 points to take a lead over second place Rutgers (39) on the men’s side. Michigan State ranks third in both men’s and women’s team standings.
