WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Sophomore Chase Renoll captured the men’s shot put title and the Blue Hen women set four school records to highlight the second and final day of the Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at the College of William & Mary.
The Delaware men placed fourth in the final team standings, their highest finish since the 2004 season, while the Blue Hen women places seventh overall in the team standings.
The William & Mary women captured their eighth team title and seventh in the last eight seasons with 162 points to get past runner-up Northeastern, James Madison, Georgia State, George Mason, UNC Wilmington, Delaware, Towson, and Virginia Commonwealth. Delaware’s 74.5 points were just six shy of sixth place.
The UNC Wilmington men captured the team title with 194.5 points to edge William & Mary. Virginia Commonwealth was third followed by Delaware, Northeastern, George Mason, and Georgia State. The Seahawks won their ninth team title since 1997.
Renoll became the second Blue Hen athlete of the meet to capture an individual title and qualify for the NCAA East Regionals May 30-31 at Florida State. Connor Whitesel won the hammer during Friday’s competition. Renoll won the shot put with a toss of 49-11 and also placed 10th in the discus with a throw of 130-4.
Also for the Delaware men, John Viotto was second in the shot put (49-3), Doug Alpers was third in the discus (146-0) and fifth in the shot put (47-2 1/2), Will Jurkowski was fourth in the 800 meters (1:54.65), Andrew Lynch was fourth in the shot put (48-0), the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Ross Shober, Kyle Nagy, Jeremy Simkins, and Phil Morrisey was fourth (42.83), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Simkins, Alex Malikian, Jurkowski, and Morrisey was fourth (3;20.16), Simkins was fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (55.00) and sixth in the 110 meter hurdles (15.66), Jamie Igo was fifth in the high jump (6-4 1/4), John Hally was seventh in the 110 meter hurdles (15.79), Brad Dodson was eighth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:40.01), and Seth Rohrbaugh was eighth in the discus (134-4). The top eight place finishers earned points towards the team total.
The Delaware women set four school records on the day with freshman Kayla Hennessy taking part in each one. She was second in the 400 meter hurdles with a UD record time of 1:02.46, fourth in the 100 meter hurdles in a UD record time of 14.25, teamed with Cristine Marquez, Asha Quant, and Kristi Cox to place third in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a UD record time of 3:46.90 and sixth in the 4 x 400 meter relay in a UD record time of 46.78. Hennessy broke the school records of 14.34 by Mandy Stille in the 100 meter hurdles in 2004 and the 400 meter hurdles record of 1:03.04 by Laura Fauser set in 1984. The relay teams broke their own records set earlier this spring.
Also for the UD women, Amanda Marshall (at right) was second in the discus (137-7) and fifth in the shot put (42-7), Marquez was third in the 400 meters (55.89) and sixth in the 200 meters (24.76), and Christine Sloat was sixth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:26.36).
The Blue Hens will compete at the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania this week and also take part in the Lehigh University Games on Saturday.
