HARRISONBURG, VA -- Senior Jared Wasser placed second in both the shot put and hammer to lead the University of Delaware men’s to a fifth place finish and freshman Cristine Marquez and sophomore Amanda Marshall (at right) each posted second place finishes with record-breaking performances to lead the Blue Hen women to a seventh place team finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at James Madison University.
Marquez (Old Bridge/Old Bridge, NJ) broke her own school record in the 400 meters for the third time this season as she ran to a time of 55.34 to place second and Marshall (Hightstown/Cranbury, NJ) broke a long-standing UD record in the discus with a toss of 144-4 to also place second for the Delaware women.
Marshall broke the record of 140-7 set by Adriana Festa in 1990. Marquez also finished eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:29.33 while Marshall also placed ninth in the shot put with a toss of 40-2 3/4.
Asha Quant was third in the long jump with school-record leap of 19-8 and the Blue Hen 4 x 400 meter relay team of Marquez, Liz Harvin, Quant, and Kellyn Wright placed seventh with a school record time of 3:49.46. Quant broke the UD long jump record of 18-7 set by Nancy Zaiser in 1985 while the 4 x 400 relay squad bettered the old UD mark of 3:50.16 set by Rachel Schultz, Tyechia Smith, Mandy Stille, and Wright in 2004.
Wasser led the UD men as he placed second in the shot put with a throw of 53-0 3/4 - the second best distance in school history - and also was runner-up in the hammer throw with a toss of 155-11 and seventh in the discus (140-10). Also for the Hens, freshman Chase Renoll was third in the shot put with a distance of 50-5 1/4 and fifth in the discus (143-0).
Northeastern won the women’s title with 163 points to edge six-time defending champion William & Mary with 156 points. Georgia State was third followed by UNC Wilmington, James Madison, George Mason, Delaware, Towson, and Virginia Commonwealth. The Hens improved one spot from last year’s eighth place finish.
The UNC Wilmington won the men’s title, easily downing runner-up William & Mary by a 251.5-183 margin. Defending champion Virginia Commonwealth was third followed by Northeastern, Delaware, George Mason, James Madison, and Georgia State. The Blue Hen men improved one spot from last year’s sixth place finish.
The Delaware women recorded 20 top 10 finishes as Laura Chirico was third in the pole vault (11-5 3/4), Capsouras was fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:04.46) and ninth in the 100 meter hurdles (14.75), Kelli McDonald was fourth in the pole vault (10-11 3/4), Rachel Young was sixth in the shot put (41-4 1/4) and seventh in the hammer (141-8), Annie Kowtoniuk was sixth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:52.88), Yianna Antonopoulos was eighth in the 5,000 meters (18:28.41), Stephanie Cronk was eighth in the javelin (117-6) and 10th in the discus (128-3), Christina Antonopoulos was ninth in the 1,500 meters (4:39.17), Kellyn Wright was 10th in the 800 meters (2:18.78), and Brittany Wilder was 10th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (13:18.21).
The Delaware men registered 19 top 10 finishes as the 4 x 100 meter relay team of M.J. Rawls, Scott Vari, Nick Morrissey, and Chris Johnson) was fourth (42.68), Gregg Cantwell was fourth in the 5,000 meters (14:57.78) and sixth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:27.46), Tony DiUlio was fourth in the discus (144-9) and seventh in the hammer (145-1), Doug Alpers was fifth in the shot put (48-11 1/2), Matt Arbaugh was fifth in the pole vault (14-7 1/4), Dave Gyurina was sixth in the javelin (162-8), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Morrissey, Jackson, Mike Zeberkiewicz, and Tim Brock was seventh (3:23.89), Bob Bartocci was eighth in the javelin (157-6), Brandon Swartout was ninth in the long jump (22-4 1/2), Dave Schwartz was 10th in the hammer (128-0), and Matt Guida and Jake Cohen tied for 10th in the pole vault (13-1 1/2).
VCU’s Davion Lambert was named the Most Outstanding Performer on themen’s side for field events while teammate James Frierson was named Most Outstanding Performer for track events. Lambert won the triple jump and high jump while Frierson captured the 200 and 400 meter runs and ran a leg of the winning 4 x 100 meter relay.
On the women’s side, Northeastern’s Zara Northover was named Most Outstanding Performer for field events while George Mason’s Murielle Ahoure and Northeastern’s Tramaine Shaw were Co-Most Outstanding Performers for track. Ahoure win the 100 and 200 meter dash events, Shaw won the 100 meter and 400 meter hurdle competitions and also was the winner of the long jump, and Northover captured the discus and shot put titles.
