Five Blue Hens Win Events As Delaware Women's Outdoor Track and Field Team Hosts Delaware Invitational

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams had 16 individual winners as the Blue Hens hosted the Delaware Invitational Saturday afternoon at the UD Mini-Stadium.

The Delaware men, who competed against Lincoln University, had 11 winners including Scott Vari, who won the 100 meter dash in 10.85 to qualify for the IC4A Championships on May 11-14 at Princeton University. Will Jurkowski took the 800 meter run in 1:53.46 for the Blue Hens, Kyle Schmid captured the 1500 meter run in 4:05.86, and Eugene McAuliffe won the 3000 meter run in 9:14.44.

Gregg Cantwell won the 3000 meter steeplechase in 9:41.46, Matt Guida captured the pole vault with a leap of 14’4”, and Brandon Swartout won the triple jump with a mark of 42’9.75”. Jared Wasser won the shot put with a throw of 52’4.5”, while Andy Lynch took the discus with a throw of 134’10”0. Kyle Casella won the hammer with a throw of 171’8”, while Dave Gyurina took the javelin with a throw of 164’9”.

The Blue Hen 4x100 meter relay team also qualified for the IC4A Championships by finishing second in its race in 42.43. Charlie Williams was second in the 100 meter dash in 11.04, while Chris Dixon was second in the 400 meter dash in 49.02 and Brad Dodson came in second in the 800 merter run in 1:54.63. Pat Wilcox finished second in the 1500 meter run in 4:11.82, Matt O’Brian was second in the 3000 meter run in 9:16.61, and Tyler Mayforth was second in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 9:59.87.

Dave DiVirgilio was second in the pole vault with a mark of 14’0”, while Swartout was second with a long jump of 21’2.75” and Andy Lynch was second in the shot put with a throw of 47’5.75”. Jared Wasser was second in the discus with a throw of 127’0”, while Nick Rakov was second in the javelin with a throw of 163’9”.

There were five individual winners for the Delaware women, who competed against Lincoln, Wheaton (MA), and Towson. Julia Somers led the Blue Hens by winning the 5000 meter run in 18:42.50, while Toni Riggi took the 3000 meter steeplechase in 12:03.57. Rachel Young (above) won the shot put with a throw of 44’3.5”, while Amanda Marshall won the discus with a throw of 133’7”. Stephanie Cronk took the hammer with a throw of 138’9”, while the UD 4x400 meter relay team won its event in 3:59.16.

Michelle Gomes was second in the 100 meter dash in 11.95, while Laura Heenan placed second in the 800 meter run in 2:20.81 and Brooke Maguire was second in the 3000 meter run in 10:48.98. Annie Kowtoniuk was second in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 12:24.79, while Casey Bennett was second in the pole vault with a mark of 12’0” and Asha Quant was second with a long jump of 18’5.25”. Marshall was second in the shot put with a throw of 39’10.5”, Cronk was second in the discus with a throw of 126’0”, Young placed second in the hammer with a throw of 135’0”, and the 4x100 meter relay team was second in its race in 48.22.

The Blue Hen men will next compete in the IC4A Championships while the women will compete in the ECAC Championships, also on May 11-14 at Princeton.
