PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women’s 4x200 meter relay team of Michelle Gomes, Paula Green, Brittany Wright and Asha Quant (right) set a new school record by finishing its race in 1:40.99 as the Blue Hen men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed in the second day of the Penn Relays Friday at Franklin Field.
The Delaware team finished sixth in its heat and 36th in the finals as it shattered the previous school record of 1:43.20 set in 2003 by Elizabeth Russell, Daniella Price, Tyechia Smith and Kristin Frustillo. South Carolina won the Blue Hens’ heat in 1:34.06, while Tennesse took the finals in 1:31.88.
Jared Wasser finished sixth in the Eastern shot put with a throw of 16.02 meters to lead the Delaware men, while Paul Applegate of Rutgers won the event with a throw of 17.08. Chris Dixon finished ninth in his heat and 62nd in the finals in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 55.44. Greg Simonds of Cornell took Dixon’s heat in 52.29, while Bryan
Steele was the finals champion in 49.98.
The Delaware men’s 4x200 meter relay team of Scott Vari, Chris Dixon, Frank Mancuso and Charlie Williams finished sixth in its heat and 28th in the finals in 1:27.84. The same four Blue Hens competed in the 4x100 meter relay, finishing eighth in their heat and 51st in the finals in 42.89. Texas Christian won UD’s heat in 40.17, while Texas A&M took the finals in 39.90.
The Delaware men’s distance relay team of Sam MacKenzie, Dixon, Will Jurkowski and Brad Dodson finished seventh in its heat and 17th in the finals with a time of 10:00.01. Army won the Blue Hens’ heat in 9:50.13, while LSU took the finals in 9:41.76.
