COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Junior Jared Wasser captured the shot put title for the University of Delaware men and Casey Bennett (at right) was second in the pole vault for the Blue Hen women to highlight performances at the Terrapin Outdoor Track and Field Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland Saturday afternoon.
Both Delaware teams placed 15th in the team standings. Maryland won the women’s team title with 108.5 points in the 27-team field while the Terrapin men also won the team title with 91 points in the 28-team field.
Hampton was second in the women’s final team standings followed by Morgan State, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland Eastern Shore, Rutgers, Syracuse, Richmond, and Norfolk in the top 10. On the men’s side, UMBC was second followed by Shippensburg, Morgan State, Lock Haven, Syracuse, Hampton, Monmouth, American, and Coppin State in the top 10.
Wasser, who became the first UD men’s team member to win a meet individual title outdoor season, threw the shot put 52-feet, 10-inches to claim the individual title. Hisdistance was the second longest throwin school history and the longest since SteveHansen set a school recordwith a toss of 55-7 in 1986. He also placed 13th in thehammer with a toss of 134-10.
Wasser was one three Blue Hens to finish in the top 10 in the men’sdivision as Kyle Casella was third in the hammer (164-11) and 21st inthe shot put (41-3) and Tony DiUliowas 10th in the discus (129-5 1/2).
Also for the Hens, Doug Alpers was 12th in theshot put (45-1 3/4) and 16th in the discus (121-9 1/2), Adam Cianfichi was 12th in the javelin (158-2 1/2), Hao Guan was 18th in the hammer (122-3) and 22nd in thediscus (115-10) and Andrew Lynch was 18th in the discus (121-8), JayMarino was 19th in the javelin (143-11 1/2), Matt O’Brian was 20th inthe 5,000 meters (16:02.55), Kyle Schmid was 20th in the 1,500 meters(4:03.25).
Bennett, who was fifth at the Raleigh Relays a week ago, was the UD women’s top finisher at Maryland as she cleared a height of 11-11 3/4 to take second place in the pole vault. Kelli McDonald placed fifth in the pole vault attempt for the Hens, leaping to a height of 11-5 3/4. McDonald’s height was the second highest in school history, trailing only Bennett, who holds the school mark at 12-0. Delaware’s top track finisher was Colleen Reid, who placed 41st in 5,000 meters with a time of 20:24.48.
