UD TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS COMPETE AT REGIONALS

 

FAIRFAX, VA &endash; The University of Delaware men's track and field team closed out the season Sunday at the IC4A championships at George Mason University by placing seventh in the 4 x 800 meter relay.

The Delaware women also competed at the ECAC championships at George Mason and closed the year with senior school record holder Brandy Connell (St. Mark's HS) placing ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 162-10.

Delaware's 4 x 800 meter relay team of junior Mark Coyle (East/West Chester, PA), Steve Greeley (Wissahickon/Ambler, PA), Troy Bockius (Dover HS), and Joe Quigley (Salesianum HS) ran to a time of 7:34.80 to place seventh overall, eight seconds slower than winner Georgetown, to earn All-East honors. The team, which included Steve Sinko (A.I. duPont HS) in place of Greeley, ran to a time of 7:33.34 in Saturday's preliminaries.

In other men's action, junior Mike DiGennaro (Hamilton-Wenham/Essex, MA) placed 14th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of school record time of 9:10.32, breaking the mark of 9:10.4 set by Jim Bray in 1975.

Also for Delaware, senior Tom Marando (St. Mark's HS) was 13th in the shot put (52-4 1/2); sophomore Sam Yarrington (Quaker Valley/Sewickley, PA) was 20th in the hammer throw (161-3); junior Eric Sands (Tunkhannock/Tunkannock, PA) placed 21st in the discus (146-5); and senior Mike Chadwick (Upper St. Clair/Pittsburgh, PA) was 24th in the hammer (158-9).

Also for the Delaware women, sophomore Carol Oliveri (St. Rose/Brick, NJ) placed 11th in the pole vault with a height of 10-0; sophomore Janna Mattey (Brandywine HS) competed in the pole vault but did not advance to the finals, and the 4 x 800 meter relay team of junior Caron Marra (Newark HS), senior Kasia Brodka (Manville/Manville, NJ), senior Kristen Robbins (Hempfield/Landisville, PA), and freshman Jennifer Crocco (North Penn/Hatfield, PA) placed 18th in a time of 9:12.49.

George Mason won the women's team title while Georgetown won the men's team crown.
