NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore midfielder Emily Schaknowski (at right) scored three goals and assisted on three more to lead the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team to a 16-9 victory over St. Bonaventure on Saturday morning at rain-soaked Rullo Stadium.
The win was the 11th straight at home for Delaware (2-1, 0-0 CAA), which also got three goals apiece from freshman midfielder Julianna Jeffers and junior midfielder Alexis Curcio.
Keri Vito scored a team-high two goals for St. Bonaventure (0-2, 0-0 Atlantic 10), while Patty Nesse contributed three assists.
The Hens never scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back, outshooting St. Bonaventure 39-23 and winning the draw controls battle 20-7. Delaware beat SBU for the second year in a row, as the Hens matched the seven-goal margin of last season's 15-8 romp in Newark.
Freshman midfielder Holly Burman needed just 29 seconds to put the Hens on top, as she gathered a feed from Amanda Lahiff and fired in a goal from close range to open the scoring. Jeffers, Schaknowski, and freshman Brittany Davis found the net to put the Hens up 4-0 with just under 20 minutes left, and Delaware held the Bonnies scoreless until Keri Vito cut the deficit to three at the 13:51 mark.
The Bonnies closed to within 6-4 when Brenna Houghton beat UD goalie Jessica Cerveny with 9:02 remaining before intermission, but Delaware attack Casey McCrudden answered just 44 ticks later to halt SBU's momentum. Jeffers added her second goal of the game at the 5:13 mark, giving UD an 8-4 lead at halftime.
Sophomore attack Nicole Flego extended Delaware's lead to five on an unassisted goal 32 seconds into the second period, but the Bonnies rattled off five of the next seven scores to trim the margin to 11-9 midway through the half.
Curcio stepped up in the clutch for Delaware, scoring her first career goal on a free-position shot with 13:38 left and finding the net again four minutes later to give UD a comfy 13-9 advantage. Burman, Schaknowski, and Curcio padded the lead with goals in the final minutes.
Cerveny kept the Bonnies at bay with nine saves on the day, while SBU's Eboni Preston collected 13 saves in a losing effort.
With six points on the day, Schaknowski established a new career high. Flego and Burman finished with two goals each for the Hens.
UD returns to the field on Monday, when the Hens host UMBC at 5 p.m.
