BALTIMORE -- Mary Heneberry scored six goals and Grace Gavin added four to propel Loyola (MD) to an 18-11 victory over the University of Delaware in women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.

Senior midfielder Katie Muth (at right) netted three goals and added an assist for the Blue Hens (1-1), who fell behind 9-3 midway through the first half when the Greyhounds scored six unanswerd goals in a nine-minute span. UD lost for the 13th time in its last 14 meetings with the traditional powerhouse.

The Hens actually took an early 2-0 lead on unassisted goals from senior attack Casey McCrudden and Muth in the first three minutes, but Loyola answered with three goals of its own - two of them by Heneberry - to claim a 3-2 edge with 23:12 left in the first half.

After sophomore attack Nicole Flego deadlocked the score at three on a feed from Muth at the 19:10 mark, Loyola put together an electric six-goal surge to all but end the game. Gavin found the net for the first time at 15:40, giving her squad a lead it would never relinquish. Bridget O'Keefe rocketed a shot past Blue Hen goalkeeper Jessica Cerveny on a free-position chance to double the Greyhound advantage 12:08 before intermission, and Gavin scored again just 12 ticks later thanks to a Kate Filippelli draw control.

Loyola continued its onslaught later in the frame, as the 'Hounds struck three times in 78 seconds to extend their lead to 9-3. Heneberry fired in two of those goals in a 44-second span.

Sophomore attack Courtney Aburn finally got the Hens back on the board with 4:27 left in the half, but Gavin promptly answered on a free-position shot. Heneberry made sure the Hens had no hope of a miracle comeback when she scored her fifth goal of the game just 11 seconds before the halftime whistle.

Loyola led by as many as 13 in the second period, rattling off another six consecutive goals early in the half.

Muth and freshman Julianna Jeffers found their rhythm late, scoring two goals apiece during a 6-0 Delaware run over the final 10:21.

Cerveny finished with eight saves for UD, which was out-shot 23-11 in the decisive first period and 39-31 overall. The Greyhounds also dominated draw controls 20-11.

Delaware got two goals apiece from Aburn and Jeffers and a one-goal, one-assist day from freshman midfielder Holly Burman.

Meg Steffe made 10 saves in the win for Loyola, which avenged last season's 18-7 loss to the Hens.

The Blue Hens return to action on Saturday, when they host St. Bonaventure at 10 a.m.
