WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- The University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team will be looking to capture its first-ever Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title this weekend as the No. 4 seed Blue Hens travel to the College of William & Mary for the championships at Albert-Daly Field.
The Blue Hens (11-5, 4-3 CAA) will take on host and No. 20 ranked William & Mary (9-8, 5-2 CAA ) in the first semifinal game at 5 p.m. followed by No. 2 seed and 13th-ranked George Mason (12-4, 5-2 CAA) taking on No. 3 seed and 18th ranked Towson (11-5, 5-2 CAA) at 7:30 p.m. The winners will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. at William & Mary with the champion earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Delaware student radio station WVUD 91.3 FM will broadcast all of the Blue Hen action at the tournament.
Delaware, which lost at William & Mary 17-13 on Apr. 20 before finishing the regular season with a 20-10 win over Villanova Friday night, has qualified for the CAA Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons for head coach Kim Ciarrocca. The Hens lost in the semifinals both previous times, falling to top seed Hofstra 9-4 in 2005 and to James Madison 15-13 last season.
The Hens will be looking for their first conference title since capturing the 1999 America East conference title. Delaware last advanced to the NCAA Tournament during the 2000 season.
Hofstra, which finished fifth in the league standings and did not qualify for the tournament, is the defending CAA champion after defeating James Madison 15-13 in the title game a year ago. William & Mary has not won a league title since 1992 with Towson’s last title coming in 2005. George Mason has never won a CAA title and has never advanced to the finals.
Delaware features a balanced attack led by sophomore Emily Schaknowski (29 goals-23 assists), senior Katie Muth (at right; 29-15), senior Casey McCrudden (39-2), sophomore Courtney Aburn (18-7), freshman Julianna Jeffers (21g, 3a), and goalkeeper Jessica Cerveny, who has posted a 10.62 goals against average and a .466 save percentage.
William & Mary, which has won seven of its last nine games and is 7-2 at home this season, ls led by CAA goal-scoring leader Jaime Sellers (60-5), Grace Golden (42-8), Maggie Anderson (30-4), andd Ashley Holofcener (22-17). Goalkeeper Emily Geary has posted an 11.50 goals against average and a .487 save percentage.
