NEWARK, DE -- Freshman Courtney Aburn (at right) and junior Casey McCrudden each accounted for four goals and two assists and Debbie Sloan and Nicole Flego netted three goals apiece as the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team cruised to its third straight win with a 16-7 victory over Virginia Tech Tuesday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
McCrudden, the current Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week, has now recorded three straight hat tricks and has posted 14 goals over her last three games. Aburn, who nearly doubled her season point total, is the first freshman to tally six points in a game since Kristina Scanlon posted three goals and three assists against Lehigh on April 27, 1993.
The Blue Hens (4-3), who lost to Virgina Tech 23-8 last season, won their third straight game for the first time since the 2005 season when the Hens defeated Old Dominion, William & Mary, and Temple in three straight outings. The 24 goal turnaround is the largest in program history with the second largest turnaround being when Delaware lost 14-13 to Lehigh in 1985, then defeated the Mountain Hawks 24-7 in 1986.
Virginia Tech (4-8), who was playing its third game in five days, dropped its fifth straight game after a 4-3 start. The Hokies were led by Britt Faulkner who posted two goals in the loss.
The Blue Hens recorded the first first three goals of the game as McCrudden scored first, just two and a half minutes into play, and she was followed by back-to-back goals from Aburn to give the Hens the 3-0 lead. Faulkner posted her 18th goal of the season on a free position shot to get the Hokies on the board but the Hens would tally seven of the next eight goals to go into halftime up 10-2.
McCrudden scored a free position goal a minute and a half into the second period to give Delaware an 11-2 lead. Katie Russo then scored her first goal of the season to get the Hokies on the board in the second half at the 25:57 mark. The Hens would score five of the next six goals to give UD their largest lead of the afternoon at 16-4 before Virgina Tech scored the games final three goals.
Head Coach Kim Ciarrocca announced prior to the game that senior co-captain Stephanie McQuade will be out for the remainder of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
The Blue Hens will complete their four-game homestand when they open CAA play against Towson Sunday. Game time is set for 12 noon at Rullo Stadium.
