RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware freshman Courtney Aburn (right) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week Monday for the second time this season. Blue Hens have now won the award three consecutive weeks as Aburn garnered the award on April 2 and Nicole Flego won it April 9.
Aburn finished the week with five goals and an assist for six points in Delaware’s two conference victories last week. Against William & Mary on Friday, the freshman scored three goals on four shots and added an assist, groundball and draw control. In the Blue Hens’ 7-6 double overtime win against Old Dominion, Aburn netted the game-winning goal just 37 seconds into the second overtime period.
Aburn and Flego have both made major impacts as freshman as the Blue Hens are 8-4 overall and 4-1 in CAA play. Flego, who leads the team with 42 points tallied seven points against No. 6 James Madison. Her seven points were the most points scored by a freshman since Meghan Mulqueen had eight points against Hofstra on March 25, 1989. Aburn, who is fourth on the team with 30 points, has scored two or more goals in six consecutive games.
James Madison’s Annie Wagner claimed CAA Player of the Week honors.
Aburn and The Blue Hens will return to action Friday against Hofstra, which is undefeated in conference play, at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
