BLACKSBURG, VA -- Junior Britt Faulkner scored six goals as Virginia Tech set a new school record for goals in a game with a 23-8 win over the University of Delaware in the two schools first ever women’s lacrosse meeting Monday afternoon at the Virginia Tech Lacrosse Stadium.
Delaware, which fell to 3-5 overall in its second straight loss, allowed the most goals in 329 games since a 23-13 loss to Virginia in 1986.
Sophomore Casey McCrudden (at right) tallied her fourth multi-goal game of the season with a team-high four goals to lead the Blue Hens while freshman Lindyn Soviero notched a career-high three points with two goals and one assist. Senior Megan Hager scored two goals and freshman Erin Zimmerman earned the first point of her career with an assist on McCrudden’s third goal of the day.
Virginia Tech’s Stephanie Jones added four goals and one assist while Natasha Fuchs and Katie Boyle each scored three goals and had one assist. Kady McBrearty tallied two goals and dished out a game-high seven assists and Lindsay Pieper notched two goals to guide the Hokies.
Virginia Tech (6-4) scored the first 10 goals of the game before Delaware’s Soviero put the Blue Hens on the board at 10:51 on an unassisted goal. McCrudden answered 3:21 later with an unassisted goal before the Hokies’ Faulkner put an end to a possible Delaware rally with a goal at 5:48 to make the score 11-2. McCrudden answered two more times to cut Virginia Tech’s lead to 11-4 just before the end of the first half.
The Hokies opened the second half with a goal by Fuchs at 28:34 before McCrudden notched her third goal of the afternoon at 27:40 to make it 12-5. Faulkner then scored three unanswered goals, giving Virginia Tech a 15-5 lead at the 23:42 mark.
Hager found the back of the cage twice for the Blue Hens to cut the lead to 15-7 in favor of the Hokies with 18:47 left in the second half. Virginia Tech answered with four straight goals to put the game out of reach for the Blue Hens, making the score 19-7 at the 11:45 mark. Soviero scored one more goal for Delaware at 4:46 before Virginia Tech ended the game scoring four goals straight.
Freshman Jess Cerveny made five saves and classmate Suzy Herlihy made three saves in goal for Delaware while Carrie Hill and Caitlin Thomas made eight saves each for Virginia Tech.
The Hokies outshot Delaware 36-33 while also holding a 24-20 advantage in groundballs.
Delaware returns to action on Friday when the Blue Hens travel to Williamsburg, VA to take on CAA foe William & Mary for a 4 p.m. game.
