BALTIMORE, MD -- The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team moved to No. 13 in both the Inside Lacrosse and United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association top 20 polls while the Blue Hen women’s team received votes for the first time this season in the Inside Lacrosse poll announced Monday.
The Delaware men (8-1), who lost to then No. 8 Georgetown 11-5 and defeated unranked Butler 7-6 this past week, dropped four spots from last week in the Inside Lacrosse media poll and two spots in the USILA coaches poll. The Blue Hens, who are tied with top-ranked Virginia for the most wins in the country at eight, will open Colonial Athletic Association action this week when they travel to defending champion Towson for a 7:30 p.m. game March 25. Towson was ranked No. 20 in the Inside Lacrosse poll and unranked in the USILA poll this week.
The Blue Hen women, who improved to 3-3 this week with narrow home wins of 9-8 over then No. 17 Pennsylvania and 10-9 over Brown, earned two votes in the Inside Lacrosse top 20 media poll for the first time this season but did not crack the top 20. Delaware will open CAA play Friday night, March 24 at unranked Towson.
Virginia moved into the top spot in both men’s polls, earning seven of eight first place votes in the USILA rankings and 20 of 21 votes in the Inside Lacrosse poll. Duke was second, Cornell was third, and last week’s No. 1 Maryland was fourth in both polls. In the USILA rankings, Hofstra was fifth followed by Georgetown, Princeton, Navy, Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts, Notre Dame, Denver, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Syracuse, Binghamton, Albany, Colgate, Loyola, and Bucknell. In the Inside Lacrosse poll, Georgetown was fifth followed by Hofstra, Navy, Massachusetts, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Denver, Notre Dame, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Albany, Syracuse, Loyola, Binghamton, Hobart, and Towson.
In the Inside Lacrosse women’s poll, defending NCAA champion Northwestern remained at No. 1, earning 14 of 15 first place votes. Duke was second followed by Johns Hopkins, North Carolina and Virginia, Maryland, Georgetown, Princeton, Dartmouth, Notre Dame, Richmond, Boston University, Cornell, William & Mary, Syracuse, Penn State, Pennsylvania, Loyola, Stanford, and James Madison. Delaware was one of four schools earning votes, including Towson, Hofstra, and Vanderbilt, with two votes.
