University of Delaware Announces 2007 Women's Lacrosse Recruiting Class

NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware women’s lacrosse head coach Kim Ciarrocca has announced the addition of 11 student-athletes who have signed NCAA National Letters of Intent to attend the University on an athletic scholarship and compete for the Blue Hen lacrosse squad beginning this fall.

The list includes attack Courtney Aburn (John Carroll/Jarrettsville, MD), defender Nora Austin (Mountain Lakes/Boonton, NJ), attack Nicole Flego (Central Bucks East/Doylestown, PA), midfielder Courtney Flounders (Penncrest/Media, PA), midfielder Haley Harman (Notre Dame Prep/Lutherville, MD), midfielder Amanda Jones (Hereford/Upperco, MD), midfielder Christy Komlo (Harriton/Bryn Mawr, PA), attack Morgan Marino (St. Paul’s/Baltimore, MD), midfielder Emily Schaknowski (Shorham/Wading River, NY), attack Kiki Shanahan (Saints Peter and Paul/Trappe, MD) and midfielder/attack Kelly Twamley (Notre Dame/Princeton, NJ).

Aburn was a standout in lacrosse, basketball, and field hockey at John Carroll High School for the past two seasons after attending North Harford High School for two years. She has earned eight varsity letters and last year earned first team all-county honors in field hockey and second team all-county laurels in lacrosse. She led North Harford to an undefeated record (17-0) and league title in 2004 and led the John Carroll field hockey team to a 15-1 mark and state title in 2004. She is a National Honor Society student.

Austin plays lacrosse, soccer, and basketball at Mountain Lakes High School and has earned seven varsity letters. She is a fourth-year varsity member in lacrosse this spring and led the team to conference titles in 2003 and 2004 and the county championship in 2004. She is a two-time all-conference selection in lacrosse and a two-time all-county pick in soccer. She is also an honor roll student at Mountain Lakes.

Flego was a two-year starter in lacrosse at Central Bucks West High School before moving on to rival Central Bucks East where she is a second-year starter at attack this spring. She led West to a two-year record of 37-4-1 and led East to a 14-6 mark last season. She earned first team All-Suburban One Conference honors last season and was named to the Doylestown Intelligencer All-Area first team. She is also active in several local club teams, including Team Toyota, Philly Girls, and Ultimate Goal Lacrosse. She is an honor student and also plays guitar. She also won a regional National Football League Punt, Pass, and Kick title.

Flounders competed in lacrosse, basketball, and soccer at Penncrest High School where she has earned four varsity letters in basketball as a guard and three in lacrosse as a midfielder entering the spring. She earned second team All-Central League honors in lacrosse last spring and played two years of soccer as a defender and goalkeeper. She is also a four-year honor roll student.

Harman participated in lacrosse and field hockey at Notre Dame Prep in Towson, MD. She was a two-year starter at midfield in field hockey and is a second-year starter in lacrosse this spring as a defensive wing. An honor roll student, her father, Vaughn, attended Delaware and was a standout football player at Towson University before playing one season with the NFL Baltimore Colts.

Jones is a third-year varsity starter at midfield for the lacrosse team at Hereford High School in Parkton, MD this spring. She was part of the school’s 2003 state championship team and led the squad to the state semifinals each of the past two seasons. She is an honor roll student at Hereford.

Komlo is a standout in lacrosse and soccer at Harriton High School. She is a fourth-year starter in lacrosse this spring and is serving as team captain after earning All-Delaware Valley League honors the last two seasons. She is a also a two-time All-Main Line selection, was the Delaware Valley League Most Valuable Player in 2005, and has led her team in scoring each of the last three seasons. She is the daughter of former University of Delaware All-American quarterback and seven-year National Football League player Jeff Komlo.

Marino played soccer and lacrosse at St. Paul’s School for Girls in Brooklandville, MD. She has been a four-year varsity player in lacrosse and led her team to the league championship last spring. She played midfielder in soccer. She is an honor roll student who has also been active in school government and drama programs and this year is the
Editor in Chief of the school newspaper. Her brother, Tyler, plays lacrosse at UMBC.

Schaknowski competed in lacrosse, basketball, and cross country at Shoreham Wading-River HIgh School and led the lacrosse team to consecutive county titles the past two seasons. A three-time all-county selection, a two-time team Most Valuable Player, and a first team All-Long Island and All-American pick in 2005, she is her high school’s all-time leader in goals and assists. In addition, she has been an all-league selection in cross country and was the team’s captain this past fall. She also plays the violin.

Shanahan has been a standout in lacrosse and field hockey and also participated in basketball at St. Peter and Paul High School in Easton, MD. A three-year varsity standout in lacrosse, she was the league Rookie of the Year in 2003 and has also earned all-conference and all-area honors twice while leading her team to the league title last spring and to two previous league runner-up finishes. She was a four-year standout striker in field hockey, earning all-conference honors all four years and earning league Player of the Year honors this past fall. A National Honor Society student, she has also won two Talbot Country Club junior golf championships.

Twamley competed in lacrosse, basketball, and field hockey at Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, NJ. She has been a member of the varsity lacrosse squad since her freshman season when she was named the area’s Freshman of the Year and has also earned all-county honors each of the past two seasons. In field hockey, she was a three-year varsity member and earned all-county honors twice. Both teams won league titles during her career.
