  Delaware Women’s Lacrosse Drops Season Finale to No. 14 Princeton

PRINCETON, NJ-- No. 14 Princeton University pulled away in the second half to defeat the University of Delaware, 14-9, in non-league women’s lacrosse action at the Class of 1952 Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Princeton (9-5), which has defeated Delaware 17 straight times, held a narrow, 8-7, advantage at the half before pulling away and outscoring the Blue Hens, 6-2, in the second half.

Delaware (5-12), which ended the season on a three-game losing streak, was led by senior Megan Hager (at right) who tallied four goals in her last appearance as a Blue Hen. Freshman Alexis Curcio tallied two goals, while classmate Lindyn Soviero notched one goal and one assist. Sophomore Casey McCrudden, who finished the season as Delaware’s leading scorer with 46 points, scored one goal and freshman Amanda Lahiff tallied the second goal of her career. Seniors Laura Libertini and Kristin Cellucci each posted one assist, while senior Diana Hall caused a team-high three turnovers and classmate Lauren Carrigan tallied a game-high six ground balls.

The Tigers were led by Kathleen Miller who scored three goals and dished out four assists and Katie Lewis-Lamonica who tallied five goals. Christine Casaceli scored two goals and posted one assist, while Ashley Amo notched one goal and one assist.

Princeton took the early lead on a goal by Lewis-Lamonica 3:43 into the contest, before Delaware’s Soviero scored 49 seconds later. Curcio tallied an unassisted goal at 24:53 to help Delaware take the 2-1 lead. McGarvie answered 25 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2. McCrudden notched a goal at 22:44 to take a 3-2 lead before Princeton scored three unanswered goals to put the Tigers up 5-3. Hager scored twice to tie the game for the fourth time of the contest at the 9:00 mark. Princeton answered three times to take a 8-5 lead before Lahiff and Hager finished the scoring at the 2:05 mark of the first half.

Casaceli opened the second half with a goal 27 seconds into the half before Curcio scored at 27:50 to make it 9-8 in favor of the Tigers. Princeton scored five straight goals before Hager ended the streak at 5:00 on an assist from Libertini.

Delaware’s Suzy Herlihy made six saves on the night after replacing starter Jessica Cerveny, who made two saves and Princeton’s Colleen O’Boyle made 12 saves.

This marks the final game of the season for the Blue Hens, who failed to make the playoffs after earning the school’s first-ever CAA berth in 2005.
