Cellucci Nets Game-Winner as Delaware Completes Rally with 10-9 Win over No. 17 Penn

NEWARK, DE -- Delaware senior Kristin Cellucci scored with 54 seconds remaining to give the Blue Hens a thrilling 10-9 women's lacrosse win over No. 17 Pennsylvania on Wednesday evening at Rullo Stadium.

Delaware (2-3), which scored the final four goals of the game to overcome a three goal deficit, was led by junior Katie Muth, who scored a game-high three goals. Sophomore Jenny Diana added two goals while freshman Debbie Sloan and Cellucci posted one goal and one assist apiece. Sophomore Casey McCrudden and freshmen Lindyn Soviero and Alexis Curcio each tallied one goal.

Penn (4-2) was led by Ali Ryan who scored two goals and dished out one assist. Melissa Lehman notched two goals and Emily Cochran scored one goal and notched one assist for the Quakers.

Delaware took an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back unassisted goals by Curcio and McCrudden 5:32 into the contest. Penn answered four times to give the Quakers a 4-2 lead on goals by Ryan, Cochran, Kaitlin Farmer, and Lauren McDermott with 10:38 remaining in the first half.

Delaware’s Sloan scored an unassisted goal at 8:35 to bring the Hens within one and Soviero tallied her first collegiate goal 1:11 later to tie the game, 4-4. Once again, Penn answered with three goals of its own to take a 7-4 lead at the 1:28 mark before Muth made it 7-5 with 53 seconds remaining in the first half.

Diana scored 48 seconds into the second half to make it 7-6 before Penn’s Lehman and Karen Jann each tallied a goal to give the Quakers a 9-6 lead with 20:37 left in the game. The Blue Hens took control when Muth scored on a free position shot at 16:01 and Diana took a pass from Cellucci 15 seconds later to make it 9-8. Muth tied the contest at the 9:53 mark on a free position shot before Cellucci scored the game-winner with 54 seconds remaining in the game off of an assist from Megan Hager.

Delaware’s Jessica Cerveny earned the win for the Blue Hens, making 10 saves and allowing five goals in relief of Suzy Herlihy, while Penn goalie Karrie Moore took the loss for the Quakers, allowing five goals and making two saves.

The Blue Hens will host Brown University at home on Sunday, March 19 for a 12 noon game.
