  Delaware Women’s Lacrosse Upsets George Mason; Earn First CAA Win of the Season

NEWARK, DE-- Freshman Lindyn Soviero (at right) scored three goals and tallied one assist to lead the University of Delaware to a 10-9 come from behind win over George Mason in Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse action on Friday evening at Rullo Stadium.

Delaware (5-9, 1-5 CAA), which has had eight games decided by one goal this season, was led by junior Katie Muth who notched three goals and senior Megan Hager who scored one goal and dished out a season-high three assists. Sophomore Casey McCrudden and freshman Debbie Sloan each posted one goal and one assist, while senior Laura Libertini added a goal.

George Mason (7-6, 3-2 CAA), which had a three-game winning streak over Delaware snapped, received two goals and two assists from Brittany Berger, while Laura King posted two goals and one assist. Jess Shelton added two goals, while Sarah Bryant, Melissa Curry, and Jenna Celano each tallied a goal.

McCrudden took a pass from Hager 3:04 into the contest to give Delaware a 1-0 lead before George Mason scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead at the 22:52 mark. Soviero answered with a free position goal at 15:54 before Muth tallied a goal exactly one minute later to even the score 3-3. Mason’s Celano scored at the 7:55 mark before Libertini evened the score once again with 3:24 remaining in the first half. Muth scored 23 seconds later to give Delaware a 5-4 lead at the half.

George Mason opened the second half scoring five unanswered goals to make it 9-5 at the 15:01 mark before Soviero took a pass from Sloan to cut the lead to three. Muth took a pass from Hager at 10:57 before Hager scored a free position goal with 6:01 remaining to tie the game at 8-8. Soviero broke the tie at 5:24 before assisting on the game-winning-goal by Sloan with 4:01 remaining in the contest.

Delaware’s Jessica Cerveny posted nine saves in the net, while Mason’s Roxie Alsruhe made 13 stops.

Delaware had 37 shots on the night to George Mason’s 24, while the Patriots posted 26 groundballs to the Blue Hens 22.

Delaware returns to action on Sunday when the Blue Hens host James Madison University for a 1 p.m. game.
