Delaware Women’s Lacrosse Assistant Alex Kahoe Takes Assistant Coaching Position at Duke

DATE: July 31, 2006

athlete photoNEWARK, DE -- Alex Kahoe, who has spent the last three seasons at the University of Delaware as a women’s lacrosse assistant coach, has left the Blue Hen staff to take a similar position at Duke University.

Kahoe (at right), who served last season as associate head coach to Kim Ciarrocca at Delaware, will be an assistant coach under Kerstin Kimel at Duke. The Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA semifinals last season before falling to national champion Northwestern.

A national search is currently underway to replace Kahoe at Delaware.

In 2005, Kahoe helped Delaware go 8-8 for their first .500 or better season since 2000 and advance to the league tournament for the first time since 2001. The Hens defeated three Top 20 teams during the season and returned to the Top 20 for the first time since 2000, moving as high as No. 15 in March.

A 2000 graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in both criminal justice and sociology, Kahoe began her coaching career at her alma mater, serving as an assistant for head coach Cindy Timchal from August, 2000 until August, 2002. The Terrapins won their seventh straight national title in 2001 and advanced to the national quarterfinals in 2002.

Kahoe moved on to the University of Pennsylvania where she served as an assistant coach under Karen Brower for the 2003 season. The Quakers posted a record of 6-10.

Kahoe enjoyed an outstanding career at Maryland as a goalkeeper, leading the Terrapins to five straight NCAA Division I national titles in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, three Atlantic Coast Conference titles, and a combined record of 100-5. She was a three-time team captain, earned All-America honors in 1998, 1999 and 2000, and was the NCAA Goalie of the Year her final two seasons.

In addition, she was the 1997 ACC Rookie of the Year and was the ACC Goalie of the Year three times. She was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary team in 2002. In the spring of 2006, she was selected to the NCAA 25th Anniversary All-Time Women’s Lacrosse team.

While a student at Maryland, Kahoe served as a technical representative for STX for four years and worked in the Maryland sports marketing office for two years. Upon graduation, she worked as a field marketing representative and sales representative for Black & Decker for two years, worked as a camp supervisor for the All American Lacrosse Camp, was an executive assistant for Women’s Lacrosse.com website and was owner, director and coach for the Ultimate Goal Lacrosse Club team. She also was a three-year member of the Athletic Council, served on the Student Athlete Advisory Council, and was a student member of the NCAA Re-Certification Committee.

Still an active player, she has been a member of the USA National Lacrosse Team since 1997 and has played with the Toyota Lacrosse Team since 2000. She also earned a tryout with the 2005 U.S. Women’s Lacrosse Team in January, 2005.
