Three With University of Delaware Ties on NCAA 25th Anniversary Women’s Lacrosse All-Time Team Ballot

INDIANAPOLIS, IN  -- Three former women’s lacrosse standouts with ties to the University of Delaware are among the candiates for the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse 25th Anniversary Team to be selected by fans this month.

Karen Emas (at right), Delaware’s all-time leading scorer and a member of three straight national title teams in 1981-83, Anne Brooking, another member of three national championship teams and an All-American defender, and Alex Kahoe, a former All-American goalkeeper at Maryland and currently Delaware’s associate head coach, are among 34 student-athletes and five head coaches on the ballot. The ballot was put together by an expert panel following extensive research on the history of the women’s game in the NCAA.

A total of 12 players and one coach will be selected to the 25th Anniversay Team. Fans have until this Friday, March 24 to log on to http://web1.ncaa.org/womens25 and place their votes.

In addition to Emas, Brooking, and Kahoe, other players on the ballot include attackers Cathy Nelson (Maryland), Marie Schmucker (Temple), Lauren Simond (Princeton, Sheehan Stanwick (Georgetown), Tami Worley (Penn State), Gail Cummings (Temple), Erin Elbe (Georgetown), Marsha Florio (Penn State), Amy Appelt (Virginia), and Jen Adams (Maryland), midfielders Laura Harmond (Maryland), Kristin Kjellman (Northwestern), Mandee Moore (Temple) , Sascha Newmarch (Maryland), Lisa Rebane (Princeton), Amory Rowe (Princeton), Theresa Sherry (Princeton), Liz
Berkery (Harvard), Quinn Carney (Maryland), Betsy Elder(Maryland), Sarah Forbes (Maryland), Kelly Amonte (Maryland), and Kathleen Barrett (Temple), defenders Rachael Becker (Princeton), Barbara Bielicki (Temple), Cheri Greer (Virginia), Carol Progulkski (Massachusetts), Kristin Sommar (Princeton), Tracey Stumpf (Maryland), and Sandy Vander-Heyden (New Hampshire),  and goalkeeper Erin O’Neill (Princeton).

The coaches include Jane Miller of Virginia, Chris Sailer of Princeton, Sue Delany-Scheetz of Penn State, Tina Sloan-Green of Temple, and Cindy Timchal of Maryland.

Emas, who upon graduation held NCAA records for goals (310) and points in a career (420), competed in the NCAA Tournament in 1983 and 1984, leading the Blue Hens to the 1983 national title under head coach Janet Smith. She was also part of teams that won AIAW national championships in both 1981 and 1982. She earned first team All-American honors in 1984 and was named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 1983. She is a member of the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame.

A standout defender, Brooking also led Delaware to AIAW national titles in 1981 and 1982 and to the NCAA national crown during the 1983 campaign. She earned first team All-American honors as a senior in 1983 and is also a member of the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame.

Kahoe, now in her third season on the UD women’s lacrosse staff, including her first as associate head coach, enjoyed a standout career at the University of Maryland as a goalkeeper. She played in four straight NCAA Tournaments and never lost a game, leading the Terrapins to consecutive national titles in 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000. She was a first team All-American in both 1999 and 2000, earned second team All-American notice in 1998, and was a two-time national Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000.
