Delaware Scores Final Five Goals to Win Wild One, 13-8 Over Towson

NEWARK, DE - Senior Becky Rausa (Fallston, MD/ Forest Hill) scored two goals and assisted on two others in the final five minutes of the game to break an 8-8 tie as No. 20 Delaware handed No. 16 Towson its first loss of the season with a 13-8 win on Friday night at Rullo Stadium.

Towson was the highest ranked opponent the Blue Hens have beaten since a 10-8 win over No. 12 Vanderbilt on April 8, 2000.

The Blue Hens (4-2, 1-0 CAA) received a career-high five goals from Casey McCrudden (Voorhees, NJ/ Eastern), and three goals from sophomore Katie Muth (Ellicott City, MD/ Seton Keough). Delaware leading scorer Erin Edell (Glenelg, MD/ Glenelg) was held without a goal for the first time this season but did contribute two assists on the night. Patrice Hughes (Springfield, PA/ Springfield) made six saves in net for the Blue Hens.

Towson (5-1, 0-1 CAA) received two goals apiece from Becky Trumbo and Shannon Witzel as Trumbo also added two assists. Mandy Corry made eight saves in net for the Tigers.

With the two teams tied at 2-2 with 14:11 remaining in the first half, Delaware went on a 5-0 run to close out the first half and take a 7-2 lead. During that run the Blue Hens received three straight goals from Muth for her second hat trick of the year.

Towson outscored Delaware 6-1 over the first 22 minutes of the second half to tie the game at 8-8, during that stretch Delaware did have a goa by Muth disallowed because of an illegal stick. However, with Rausa leading the way the Blue Hens came firing back and outscored the Tigers 5-0 over the final five minutes of the game to guarantee the victory.

Delaware held a 26-20 advantage in shots while Towson held the slight advantage in ground balls, 25-24.

The Blue Hens will return to action on a week from today when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Drexel Dragons at 3 p.m.
