No. 17 Blue Hens Use Balance to Turn Back Temple 14-7

NEWARK, DE -- The No. 17 University of Delaware women's lacrosse team used a strong offense output and a dominating defense to pick-up at 14-7 non-conference win over Temple University on Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium. The Blue Hens who have now won three straight games to improve their record to 8-5 and guarantee themselves of at least a .500 finish and a non-losing season for the first time since 2000. The victory also gave first-year head coach Kim Ciarrocca a win in the first meeting versus her former team. Ciarrocca had been the head coach at Temple for the past 12 years before coming to Delaware in July of last year.

Delaware (8-5) received three goals from senior Becky Rausa (Fallston, MD/ Forest Hill), while CAA Rookie of the Week Casey McCrudden (Voorhees, NJ/ Eastern), Laura Miller (Morton, PA/ Ridley), and sophomore Kaite Muth (Ellicott City, MD/ Seton Keough-right) each scored two goals apiece. McCrudden, Rausa, and Miller all added an assist on the night while junior Megan Hager (Berwyn, PA/ Conestoga) dished out two helpers on the night to go along with her goal. Junior Patrice Hughes (Springfield, PA/ Springfield) made 12 saves in net.

Temple (6-6) dropped its second straight contest despite receiving four goals from Allison Frengs who later added an assist. Casey Cech had a goal and an assist on the night while Megan McLouth and Caitlin Gregory combined to make 11 saves in net for the Owls.

Delaware jumped out to the early lead in this one, as the Blue Hens found the back of the net for three quick scores before Temple could get on the board. The Blue Hens held a 6-2 lead when Frengs tried to bring Temple back into this one almost by herself. The Owls scored three straight goals from 16:43 to 10:39 to cut the Blue Hen lead to 6-5 and Frengs had two of those goals. Delaware pushed it lead to 8-5 before settling for the 8-6 lead at the half.

Delaware responded to open the second half by scoring four unanswered goals to push their lead to 12-6. Temple finally got on the scoreboard at 11:16 of the second half as Frengs scored her fourth goal of the game but Delaware closed out the victory with two goals in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.

The Blue Hens held a 33-24 advantage in shots while the groundballs were even at 20 apiece.

The Blue Hens will return to action on Tuesday, April 26 when they host Princeton in their final home at 7 p.m. Prior to the start of that game, Delaware will honor the six seniors for their contributions to the program.
