April 18, 2004 Diana Scores Five
Goals in Blue Hens' CAA Regular Season Finale;
WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Freshman Jenny Diana (Burke, VA/Robinson) scored a career-high five goals but 16th-ranked William & Mary used a big first first half to earn a 18-10 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team Sunday afternoon at Busch Field. William & Mary (8-6, 4-2 CAA) was led by Colleen Dalon and Morgan Watkins, who each notched four goals and one assist. Diana paced the Hens with her five tallies and sophomore Megan Hager (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) found the back of the net twice for Delaware, which was elimated from the CAA tournament for the third straight year. William & Mary scored a season-high 11 times in the first half while the Blue Hens managed a season-low two tallies. The Tribe opened the scoring with three unanswered goals to lead 3-0 with 23:56 to go in the first half. Diana responded off a feed from junior Erin Edell (Glenelg, MD/Glenelg) to cut the Tribe lead to 3-1 at 20:03. The Tribe responded with two more goals to take a 5-1 lead with 13:37 remaining. Diana scored a minute later but that was the end of the Delaware offense in the first half as the Tribe ended the stanza with six unanswered scores to take a commanding 11-2 lead into the break. Lauren Work scored just 1:10 seconds into the second half to give the Tribe their largest lead of the game, 12-2. However, Delaware responded by scoring six of the next seven goals. Diana scored twice during the Delaware rally that began with senior Becky Zane's (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) score at 28:15 and ended with a goal by Hager at 13:38 that cut the Tribe lead to 13-8. Delaware couldn't maintain the momentum as Kelly McQuade, Work and Dalon countered the Hens' run with a goal each to give the Tribe a 16-8 lead with 6:40 remaining. Sophomore goalkeeper Debby Petracca made 10 saves on the afternoon for the Tribe. Sophomore Patrice Hughes (Springfield, PA/Springfield) registered eight saves in the loss for Delaware. The Tribe held a decisive advantage in shots over the Blue Hens, 45-24. Despite concluding their conference schedule, the Blue Hens still have two more non-conference contests on the docket. Delaware travels to Philadelphia on Wednesday, April 21 to take on Temple at 3 p.m. before it hosts Penn State on Saturday, May 8, at 1 p.m. in its regular season finale. Lacrosse Box Score:
