Jenny Diana and senior Shannon Kron notched two
goals apiece but it wasn't enough as the University of
Delaware women's lacrosse team dropped its Colonial Athletic
Association opener to Towson, 9-6, Sunday afternoon at
Minnigan Stadium.
The Tigers got on the board first with
two quick scores in the first eight minutes of action as
Shannon Witzel and Caitlin Marshall both found the back of
the net for Towson at 25:08 and 22:15, respectively.
Delaware's senior attack Michelle Campolettano
retaliated for the Hens at 21:00 but the Tiger's Amy
Middleton scored at 19:17 to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
Goals by Diana and Kron brought the Blue Hens to the only
tie of the game at 3-3 with 14:27 to go in the first half
but that was as close as they got as Towson rattled off four
goals to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.
Towson opened the second half with two
scores to take its largest lead of the game, 9-4, with 20:50
to play in regulation. Diana and senior attack Becky Zane
started a late rally, scoring a goal each in the last 10
minutes of the game but it was enough to pull the Blue Hens
back from behind.
Middleton and Becky Trumbo lead the
Tigers with two goals and an assist each while Witzell and
Marshall each had two goals as Towson improved to 7-2 (1-0
CAA) on the season
Sophomore Patrice Hughes made
eight saves in goal for the Blue Hens in the
loss.
Delaware (2-5, 0-1 CAA) held the
advantage in shots (27-24) and ground balls (28-22) while
Towson held the edge in draw controls (13-5) and caused
turnovers (12-7).
The Blue Hens return to action on Friday
as they continue Colonial Athletic Association play against
the Drexel Dragons at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
