NEWARK, DE -- Top ranked Loyola
jumped out to an 8-3 halftime lead but had to hold back a
spirited comeback by the University of Delaware for a 12-8
non-league women's lacrosse victory Friday night at Rullo
Stadium.
The Greyhounds, the No. 1 ranked team in
this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches
Association Top 20 poll, improved to 4-0 on the season as
Suzanne Eyler scored three goals and dished out an assist
and Rachel Schuck and Talia Shacklock each contributed two
goals.
Delaware (1-3), playing its first No. 1
ranked team since falling to Maryland 9-8 back in 1997, got
three goals from freshman Kristin Cellucci
(Springfield/Springfield, PA), the first three goals of her
career. Nikki Kucharski (Cherry Creek/Englewood, CO)
added two goals and two assists and Libby Pforr (Cold
Spring Harbor/Lloyd Harbor, NY) contributed two
goals.
The Blue Hens have now lost nine straight
verdicts to Loyola since 1996 and trail the series 19-7. The
Greyhounds have been ranked in the top 10 in all previous
nine meetings.
Delaware played Loyola tough in the early
going and trailed just 3-2 with 16:02 left in the first
half. But the Greyhounds tore off an a 5-0 run and
eventually took an 8-3 lead into intermission. Eyler scored
all three of her goals as Loyola pulled away.
Loyola extended the lead to 11-3 when the
Greyhounds scored the first three goals of the second half
just five minutes into the stanza on tallies by Jacklyn
Borrone, Shacklock, and Kristi Korrow. Both teams traded
goals as Pforr scored for the Hens with 20:24 remaining and
Loyola's Jen Schuerholz answered three minutes later to put
the score at 12-4.
But Delaware finished with a flurry as
Michelle Campolettano scored her first goal of the
season just seconds after entering the game with 16:49
remaining, Kucharski scored nearly three minutes later, and
Cellucci scored her third goal with 9:07 remaining to cut
the lead to 12-7. The Hens might have added more but Loyola
backup goalkeeper Cindy Nickolaus (six saves) came up with
several big saves at point blank range to keep the
Greyhounds in front.
The Hens were held in check for eights
minutes before closing the scoring with a goal by Pforr with
31 seconds left.
Delaware goalkeeper Lauren Burtch,
who started the game but was removed in the opening minutes,
returned in the nets and was solid in the second half,
posting four saves and holding Loyola scoreless for the
final 17:23 of the game.
Delaware will return to action Sunday
when the Hens take on Towson in its Colonial Athletic
Association opener.
