WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Morgan Watkins
scored two goals and added two assists to lead No. 17 ranked
William & Mary past the University of Delaware, 8-6, in
Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse action
Saturday afternoon at Busch Field.
The loss was the Blue Hens' fifth
straight, four them coming by two goals or less and four of
them vs. teams ranked in the top 20 in the Intercollegiate
Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll.
In a relatively low-scoring first half,
Delaware rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game with
Michelle Campolettano (St. Anthony's/Massapequa Park,
NY) and Nikki Kucharski scoring goals within 16
seconds of each other late into the first half. The Tribe's
Colette Chaput broke the tie a minute later with her first
of two goals in the contest to give William and Mary a 3-2
halftime lead.
The Blue Hens tied the game again three
minutes into the second period on a Kateri Linville
(Moorestown/Moorestown, NJ) goal. But WIlliam & Mary
responded by going on a five-goal run to make the score to
8-3.
Delaware made a charge late in the
contest, scoring three scores in the final 10 minutes of
play, with Campolettano, who led Delaware with three goals,
connecting off feed from Ashley Moderacki with 8:54
left and again off a pass from Connie Martin with
5:02 remaining, to cut the margin to 8-5.
Moderacki, a senior co-captain and team's
leading scorer, tallied her only goal of the game with 2:40
left but the Hens couldn't find the nets again.
Senior co-captain Laurie
Tortorelli (Haverford/Haverford, PA) stopped 14 shots in
goal for UD in the losing effort.
William & Mary improves to 3-5
overall (2-2 CAA) while the Blue Hens sink to 2-6 overall
and 1-4 in its first season of CAA play.
Delaware continue's play against the
nation's elite as the Hens will play at No. 2 Princeton
Wednesday night in Princeton, NJ. The Tigers will be the
sixth nationally-ranked opponent that the Blue Hens have
played this season.
