Moderacki Scores Six Times, But Towson Pull Out CAA Win

NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware senior Ashley Moderacki netted a career-high six goals but it wasn't enough as Towson snapped a seven-game losing streak vs. the Blue Hens with a 12-11 Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse victory Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium.

Ashley Moderacki scored a career-high six goals for the Blue Hens

Towson won its second straight to improve to 3-3, 2-2 CAA as Kat Brady scored three goals and Kristyn Krastel, Caitlin Marshall (two assists), and Amy Middleton each scored twice. The Tigers downed the Hens for the first time in seven tries since an 8-3 win in 1997. Delaware had also won three straight over rival Towson at home.

The Blue Hens, coming off a one-goal win over Rutgers a week ago in an 11-10 victory, could not pull out the close verdict again despite an explosive effort by leading scorer Moderacki. Moderacki's six-goal explosion was the highest goal output for a Blue Hen player since Sarah Edwards scored seven vs. Penn State April 2, 2000.

Moderacki, a senior attack from Havertown, PA (Haverford HS) who was coming off a five-goal effort vs. Rutgers, almost single handedly brought the Blue Hens back from a four-goal second half deficit. She scored five of her six goals in the second stanza, including four in the final 11 minutes and 42 seconds.

Delaware senior Corinne Shuck added two goals, her fifth straight multiple goal game since last season, while Kateri Linville, Brooke Mulligan, and Michelle Campolettano also scored. The teams each recorded 27 shots on goal but Towson goalkeeper Jessica O'Connell came up with 16 saves.

Linville scored the first goal of the game just 49 seconds in to give UD a 1-0 lead but Towson answered with five straight goals, two by Marshall, to take a 5-1 lead with 16:53 left in the first half. Delaware never could regain a share of the lead.

Moderacki scored a goal with 31 seconds left before halftime then scored the first goal of the second half to cut the Tiger lead to 7-5. But Towson scored five of the next eight goals to go up 12-8 with 6:56 left to play. Moderacki caught fire for the Hens, scoring off a Shannon Kron feed with 4:43 and adding an unassisted goal 47 seconds later to cut the lead to 12-10.

Just one minute later she scored again to cut the TU lead to 12-11 with 2:01 to play. The Hens had two more chance to score but couldn't convert.

Delaware will continue home CAA action Saturday when the Blue Hens host James Madison at 12 noon at Rullo Stadium.
