First Half Run Lifts Loyola Past Delaware in CAA Play

Nikki Kucharski scored twice for the Blue Hens

BALTIMORE, MD -- Jaclyn Borrone scored three of her game-high four goals during a 6-0 first half run as No. 6 ranked Loyola College defeated the University of Delaware 13-6 in a Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse contest Tuesday afternoon at Curley Field.

The Greyhounds, who were coming off a 10-9 loss to unranked Penn State Saturday, improved to 9-2 and stayed unbeaten in CAA play with a record of 6-0. Delaware, playing a top 20 team for the sixth time in the last seven games, dropped its eighth straight game to fall to 2-9, 1-5 CAA. Loyola, which has won seven of its last eight games, defeated the Blue Hens for the eighth straight time since 1995.

Junior Nikki Kucharski (Cherry Creek/Englewood, CO) led the Blue Hens with two goals while Corinne Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD), Michelle Campolettano (St. Anthony's/Massapequa, NY), Shannon Kron (Maryvale Prep/Baltimore, MD), and Diana Hall (Centreville/Clifton, VA) each tallied once. Goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli (Haverford/Havertown, PA) posted 18 saves in the nets.

Borrone, who entered the game having scored just 11 goals all season, scored four in the first half alone to get the Greyhounds off to a quick start. Leading scorer Stacey Morlang added three goals and two assists and Suzanne Eyler scored three times.

Morlang and Eyler scored in the first five minutes of the game for a 2-0 Loyola lead but the Hens came back to cut the lead to one on Hall's second goal of the season with 23:41 left in the opening half.

But Loyola followed with six unanswered goals, including three by Borrone, to take control at 8-1 with 15:39 left in the opening stanza. Delaware's Shuck and Kron scored later in the half to cut the lead to 8-3 at intermission.

Kucharski scored just six minutes into the second half to cut the lead to 8-4, but Morlang and Borrone answered with goals and the Hens could never get closer.

Delaware will face yet another ranked team Thursday when the Hens host CAA foe and No. 19 ranked George Mason at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
