Drexel, Post Easy Victory in Season
Opener
PHILADELPHIA -- Senior Corinne
Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD) and sophomore
Michelle Campolettano (St. Anthony's/Massapequa Park,
NY) each scored three goals as the University of Delaware
women's lacrosse team opened its 2002 season with an 18-2
Colonial Athletic Association victory over host Drexel
University Tuesday afternoon.
Delaware (1-0. 1-0 CAA) jumped out to a
8-2 halftime lead and then held the Dragons (1-1) without a
goal for the entire second half for the easy victory. The
Hens have now defeated Drexel (1-1, 0-1 CAA) nine straight
times and 17 times in the last 18 meetings.
A total of 11 different Delaware players
scored goals as Ashley Moderacki, Becky Zane, and
Nikki Kucharski each tallied twice. Moderacki also
added two assists. Brooke Mulligan added a goal and
two assists Zane added an assist and Shannon Kron
contributed one goal and one assist.
Delaware goalkeeper Laurie
Tortorelli posted eight saves and allowed just two goals
in 51 minutes of action. The Blue Hens outshot the Dragons
40-17.
Drexel's Jamie Connahan scored the game's
first goal just four minutes and 10 seconds into the game
before Delaware struck back to tie it at 1-1 on a goal by
Shuck 13 seconds later. Moderacki scored to give the Hens a
2-1 lead, but Drexel answered on a goal by Laurie Bean with
18:32 left in the first half for a 2-2 tie.
That would be the last time the Dragons
would hit the back of the nets as the Hens scored 16
unanswered goals and held Drexel scoreless for almost 39
minutes.
The Blue Hens will continue action
Saturday, March 9 at CAA foe Old Dominion.
