BURLINGTON, VT -- Eleven different
University of Delaware players scored at least one goal and
13 had at least one point as the Blue Hens overwhelmed host
University of Vermont for a 19-3 America East women's
lacrosse victory Saturday afternoon at Centennial
Field.
Senior Megan Fortunato (Upper
Moreland/Hatboro, PA) scored a game-high four goals and
dished out an assist and five other Blue Hen players added
two goals each as Delaware (7-8, 5-1) won easily in its
final regular season league game of the season. The Hens
will host Temple in their regular season finale May 2 before
taking part in the America East Tournament May 4-5.
If Hofstra defeats Boston University
Sunday, the Pride would be the No. 1 seed and host the
tournament in Hempstead, NY, taking on No. 4 New Hampshire
in one semifinal with No. 2 Delaware taking on No. 3 Boston
University. Should Boston University defeat Hofstra Sunday,
the Terriers would be the No. 1 seed and host the
tournament, taking on New Hampshire in the first round.
Delaware would play New Hampshire in the other semifinal
match.
Vermont, which lost its fourth straight
game, ended its season at 3-11, 1-5. Courtney LaMere, Sarah
Booker, and Blair Griffin each scored a goal for the
Catamounts while goalkeeper Anne Waldelton stopped 14
shots.
Fortunato scored just 12 seconds into the
game for UD, but Vermont tied it up just two minutes later
on a goal by Booker. The Hens, who outshot Vermont 36-13 on
the day, reeled off seven straight goals from there to go up
8-1 and then took a 10-2 lead into halftime. Delaware scored
the first seven goals of the second stanza to go up
17-2.
Delaware, which improved to 36-6 all-time
in America East play, including a 6-0 mark vs. Vermont, got
two goals and one assist each from senior Kate
O'Connell (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, MD), junior Brooke
Mulligan (Mt. de Sales/Baltimore, MD), and freshman
Becky Zane (Garnet Valley/Glen Mills, PA) while
sophomores Nikki Kucharski (Cherry Creek/Englewood,
CO) and Katrina Metz (Plymouth-Whitemarsh/Fort
Washington, PA) added two goals apiece. Delaware junior
goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli (Haverford/Havertown,
PA) posted eight saves to post the win.
Fortunato took over the team leadership
in scoring with 44 points and moved into ninth place on the
all-time UD goal scoring list with 115.
