TOWSON, MD -- Senior Megan
Fortunato and junior Corinne Shuck each scored
four goals as the 17th ranked University of Delaware women's
lacrosse team opened its America East conference season with
a 15-6 victory over Towson University at Minnegan Stadium
Saturday.
The Blue Hens (3-1, 1-0) won their second
straight game and won their conference opener for the fourth
straight year. Delaware has now defeated Towson seven
straight times and the Blue Hens are 27-3 all-time in
America East regular season play.
Towson (2-3, 1-1) lost its second
straight despite two goals each from Tracey Drown and Cheryl
Back.
For the second straight game, the Hens
jumped out to a 7-2 halftime lead and never looked back to
post the easy victory. The Hens also held Towson's leading
scorer, Nicole Wittelsberger, to just one goal.
Fortunato, Delaware's leading scorer last
season with 31 goals and 25 assists for 56 points, had her
second straight four-goal game and also added an assist
after scoring just once in the Hens' first two games.
Fortunato upped her career scoring total to 92 goals and 59
assists for 151 points, moving past Sue Daddona (147
points in 1992-95) for 13th place on the UD career scoring

Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD) also
added four goals and an assist to pace the Blue Hens while
Katrina Metz and Kate O'Connell each added one
goal and one assist.
Towson cut the Blue Hen lead to 3-2 with
12:21 left to play in the opening half, but Delaware reeled
off the last four goals of the first half for a 7-2 halftime
lead and tallied the first two goals of the second half,
both by Shuck, to go up 9-2.
Towson battled back and cut the lead to
10-6 on a goal by Drown with 12:48, but the Hens responded
with the final five goals of the game, two by Fortunato, to
post the victory.
