Moderacki, Shuck Have Career Days in Opening Win

 

Ashley Moderacki (21) Scored a Career-High Five Goals

RICHMOND, VA -- Juniors Ashley Moderacki and Corinne Shuck combined to score nine times and each reached a career high for goals in a game as the No. 12 ranked University of Delaware women's lacrosse team opened its 2001 season with a 12-7 non-league victory over host Richmond Saturday afternoon at President's Field.

Moderacki (Haverford/Havertown, PA) scored a game-high five goals and Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD) tallied four times and dished out an assist as the Hens won their season opener for the second straight year.

The Hens, coming off a 2000 season that saw them post a 14-4 record and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1984, also downed Richmond (0-1) for the fifth straight year and for the 14th time in the last 15 meetings. Kate O'Connell (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, MD) and Brooke Mulligan (Mt. de Sales/Baltimore, MD) each scored a goal and dished out two assists to lead the Blue Hen cause.

Richmond got two goals from Alexis Brandolini while Carrie Aitken and Katie Chasney each added one goal and one assists.

Delaware, which broke out to a 6-3 halftime lead and never looked back, held a 35-22 advantage in shots on goal. Blue Hen junior goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli (Haverford/Havertown, PA) posted eight stops while Spider netminder Kelly Johnson posted 12 saves.

Richmond cut the Delaware lead to 7-5 with 15:20 left in the game, but the Hens followed with a four-goal flurry in a four-minute span, including three by Moderacki, to ice the game.
