NEWARK, DE -- Third-ranked
Princeton University overcame a 6-5 second half deficit by
scoring the final four goals of the game as the Tigers
knocked off host University of Delaware 9-6 in a non-league
women's lacrosse game Wednesday night at Rullo
Stadium.
Delaware (3-6), making its first home
appearance since March 10 after six straight road games,
dropped its fifth straight game, tying a school record. The
Hens have held at least a share of the lead in the second
half in all five games.
Princeton, which got four goals from Kim
Smith and three goals and an assist from Lauren Simone, won
its sixth straight game to improve to 7-1.
Senior Megan Fortunato (Upper
Moreland/Hatboro, PA) scored two goals and dished out an
assist, Ashley Moderacki (Haverford/Havertown, PA)
scored two goals, and Corinne Shuck and Claire
Marrazzo each scored once to lead Delaware. Fortunato's
first goal of the game, just four minutes into the contest,
was her 100th career goal, becoming only the 14th player in
UD history to reach the milestone.
Delaware, jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead
as Shuck, Fortunato, and Marrazzo each scored in the first
six minutes of the contest. Princeton answered with three
straight goals of its own, two by Smith, to tie the score at
3-3 with 18:56 left in the opening stanza. After Moderacki
gave UD a brief lead five minutes later, Princeton answered
again with two goals from Simone to take a 5-4 lead.
Fortunato scored her second goal with 3:48 left to knot the
score at 5-5 at halftime.
The Blue Hens took the lead again early
in the second half as Fortunato fed Moderacki for a goal
just 72 seconds into the stanza to go up 6-5. But that would
be the last time the Blue Hens would find the back of the
net.
Princeton, which defeated Delaware for
the 12th straight time, reeled off the final four goals of
the game to post the victory. Simone tied the score at 6-6
with 24:16 left and Smith added what proved to be the
game-winner with 16:58 left to play.
Delaware will return to America East
conference action Saturday when the Hens host Drexel at 3
p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
