NASHVILLE, TN -- Notre Dame scored
the last three goals of the game to overcome a one-goal
deficit with nine minutes left to play and post a 13-11
non-league women's lacrosse victory over No. 17 ranked
University of Delaware Saturday afternoon at Vanderbilt
Lacrosse Stadium.
The Blue Hens suffered their fourth
straight loss, the team's longest losing streak since
1995-96, to fall to 3-5 on the season while the upstart
Fighting Irish won their sixth straight game to improve to
6-1. The Hens have held the lead at some point in the final
10 minutes in each of the losses.
Ashley Moderacki
(Haverford/Havertown, PA) led the Blue Hens with four goals
and two assists while Brooke Mulligan added two goals
and one assist. Delaware's leading scorer, Megan
Fortunato, did not play due to an injury.
Notre Dame got four goals each from Anne
Riley and Danielle Shearer while Lael O'Shaughnessy added a
goal and three assists.
After Notre Dame opened the game scoring
the first three goals, Delaware battled back and took a 6-4
lead into halftime as Mulligan scored with just 37 seconds
left in the opening stanza.
The Fighting Irish opened strong again in
the second half. After Delaware scored first to go up 7-4
on a goal by Moderacki, Notre Dame scored three straight in
a four-minute span to tie the game at 7-7 with 22:15 left to
play.
The teams traded goals until the Blue
Hens took their final lead at 11-10 with 9:07 left to play
on a goal by Corinne Shuck. Notre Dame tied the game
four minutes later on a goal by Shearer and went ahead for
good when Riley scored a goal off a pass from Shearer with
5:20 left to play. Notre Dame added an insurance goal by
Kassen Delano at the 3:46 mark.
