Moderacki Scores Four, But Hens Can't Hold Off Irish

Ashley Moderacki Scored a Team-High Four Goals

NASHVILLE, TN -- Notre Dame scored the last three goals of the game to overcome a one-goal deficit with nine minutes left to play and post a 13-11 non-league women's lacrosse victory over No. 17 ranked University of Delaware Saturday afternoon at Vanderbilt Lacrosse Stadium.

The Blue Hens suffered their fourth straight loss, the team's longest losing streak since 1995-96, to fall to 3-5 on the season while the upstart Fighting Irish won their sixth straight game to improve to 6-1. The Hens have held the lead at some point in the final 10 minutes in each of the losses.

Ashley Moderacki (Haverford/Havertown, PA) led the Blue Hens with four goals and two assists while Brooke Mulligan added two goals and one assist. Delaware's leading scorer, Megan Fortunato, did not play due to an injury.

Notre Dame got four goals each from Anne Riley and Danielle Shearer while Lael O'Shaughnessy added a goal and three assists.

After Notre Dame opened the game scoring the first three goals, Delaware battled back and took a 6-4 lead into halftime as Mulligan scored with just 37 seconds left in the opening stanza.

The Fighting Irish opened strong again in the second half. After Delaware scored first to go up 7-4 on a goal by Moderacki, Notre Dame scored three straight in a four-minute span to tie the game at 7-7 with 22:15 left to play.

The teams traded goals until the Blue Hens took their final lead at 11-10 with 9:07 left to play on a goal by Corinne Shuck. Notre Dame tied the game four minutes later on a goal by Shearer and went ahead for good when Riley scored a goal off a pass from Shearer with 5:20 left to play. Notre Dame added an insurance goal by Kassen Delano at the 3:46 mark.

Delaware, which closed out a six-game, 21-day road trip, returns home April 4 to host No. 3 ranked Princeton at Rullo Stadium at 7 p.m.
