Seven Points to Lead Delaware Rout

NEWARK, DE -- Senior Kate
O'Connell (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, MD) scored a
season-high four goals and dished out three assists as the
University of Delaware scored the first eight goals of the
game and cruised to a 16-7 America East women's lacrosse
victory over Drexel University Saturday afternoon at Rullo
Stadium.
The Blue Hens snapped a school-record
tying five game losing streak to improve to 4-6 and remain
tied for first place in the America East standings with a
2-0 mark. Drexel, which lost to Delaware for the eighth
straight time (all by nine goals or more) and for the 16th
time in 17 meetings, lost its third straight game to fall to
1-7, 0-5 America East.
Delaware's Megan Fortunato (Upper
Moreland/Hatboro, PA) added three goals and an assist,
Katrina Metz (Plymouth-Whitemarsh/Fort Washington,
PA) added two goals and an assist, and Ashley
Moderacki (Haverford/Havertown, PA) pitched in with two
goals to lead Delaware. All 23 players on the Delaware team
played with 13 players scoring at least one
point.
Fortunato, who scored her 100th career
goal Wednesday vs. Princeton, upper her career point total
to 163 to move into 10th place on the all-time UD list,
surpassing Jen Coyne who had 160 points in
1984-87.
For Drexel, Katrina Rand led the way with
three goals while Laurie Bean, Cindy Arnold, Kelly Brady,
and Jamie Kosmaczewski each scored one goal. Goalkeeper
Shirley Sarker stopped 16 Delaware shots.
The Hens, who won for the first time
since a 15-6 win at Towson March 17, scored six goals in the
first 10 minutes of play, including two each by O'Connell
and Metz, to go up 6-0 and never looked back. The Hens built
their lead to 8-0 before Drexel got on the board on a goal
by Rand with 8:17 left in the first half. The Hens led 10-1
at halftime.
Delaware came out strong again in the
second half, scoring five of the first six goals, two each
by O'Connell and Moderacki, to push the margin to 15-2 with
19:17 left to play.
Drexel didn't give in however, scoring
the next five goals, including Rand's third tally of the day
with 3:11 left to cut the lead to 15-7.
Delaware continues its five-game
homestand Tuesday when the Blue Hens host No. 2 ranked
Loyola at 7 p.m.
