The
University of Delaware announced the
addition of Catherine Mellon as a
part-time assistant coach with the Blue
Hen women's lacrosse staff January 13,
2003.
During her
second season on head coach Denise
Wescott's staff in 2004, the Blue Hens
posted a 6-10 record but posted wins over
17th-ranked Penn State and over NCAA
Tournament participants Temple and Mt. St.
Mary's.
Mellon,
23, a native of Grand Island, NY where she
was a standout at Grand Island High
School, came to Delaware after a standout
career as a student-athlete at St.
Bonaventure University where she earned
her degree in math and computer science in
May, 2002. She also earned certification
in secondary education and math. An honor
student, she posted a 3.92 grade point
index for her career.
The 2002
Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year
for women's lacrosse, Mellon was a
three-year starter for the lacrosse team
on defense. She started 42 games over her
career and helped the Bonnies increase
their win total each year, capped by a 7-9
campaign in 2002.
Among her
many academic honors were spots on the
Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District team
in 2001 and 2002 and being named to the
Verizon Academic All-America University
Division At-Large Second Team in 2002.
She was
selected to the Intercollegiate Women's
Lacrosse Association All-Academic Team
three times during her career. She earned
a grant from the National Science
Foundation for robotics software design
and St. Bonaventure's General Excellence
in the Science Curriculum Award, and also
served as an undergraduate teaching
assistant in 2001-02.
In
addition, Mellon also was active in
numerous volunteer activities. She was a
leader of the lacrosse team's youth
outreach program, Bonnies Encouraging
Girls In Recreation, Leadership and Sports
(BEGIRLS), served as an orientation leader
for the St. Bonaventure Admissions office,
and mentored a St. Bonaventure, NY area
child through the "Bona Buddy" program.
