Edwards Leads Balanced Effort in Rout of Tigers

NEWARK, DE -- Senior Sarah Edwards (Friends/Moorestown, NJ) led a balanced attack with four goals and an assist to lead No. 12 ranked University of Delaware to a 19-6 America East women's lacrosse victory over Towson University Wednesday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

The Blue Hens (5-0, 2-0), the three-time defending America East champions, extended their winning streak to eight straight games since last season and upper their three-year league winning streak to 25 games since a setback to Towson in 1997. The Hens' 5-0 start is the team's best since the 1983 squad started out 12-0 on its way to winning the NCAA title.

Towson lost its second straight game to fall to 2-4, 0-1. Freshman Kristyn Krastel (North Harford/Jarrettsville, MD), this week's America East Rookie of the Week, and Kat Brady (Arch. Spaulding/Crofton, MD) each scored two goals apiece for the Tigers.

A total of 13 different Blue Hen players scored a point during the game and 11 different players scored at least one goals. The Hens have now outscored league opponents 40-8 in two games. Delaware scored the first five goals of the game before Brady scored with 14:09 left in the first half for the Tigers. The Blue Hens then scored five straight to go up 10-2 with 2:11 left in the first half.

In addition to Edwards, freshman Katrina Metz (Plymouth-Whitemarsh/Fort Washington, PA) scored her first three career goals, and Kelly Swift (Mercy/Sparks, MD), Kate O'Connell (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, MD), and Christy Buck (Mt. de Sales/Catonsville, MD) each added two goals, and Brooke Mulligan (Mt. de Sales/Baltimore, MD) dished out two assists.

Delaware's leading scorer, junior Megan Fortunato (Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA), was held to just one assist but it marked her 100th career point, making her just the 20th player in UD history to reach that milestone.

The Blue Hens will host No. 2 ranked James Madison Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
