Half Flurry Leads Blue Hens Over
Rutgers
NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware scored the first four goals of the second half to
break a 5-5 halftime tie and moved on to a 15-9 non-league
women's lacrosse victory over Rutgers in the Blue Hens' home
opener Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium.
Megan Fortunato (Upper
Moreland/Hatboro, PA) notched a game-high five goals and
dished out an assist and sophomore Corinne Shuck
(Broadneck/Annapolis, MD) scored a career-high three goals,
including two during the first five minutes of the second
half to lead the No. 14 ranked Blue Hens (2-0) to the
victory. Rutgers, a 1999 NCAA Tournament participant, fell
to 0-3 despite four goals from Jill Penrose.
The Blue Hens are now off to 2-0 start
for the first time since starting out 4-0 in
1989.
Sarah Edwards (Moorestown, NJ
Friends) and Kate O'Connell (Mt. de Sales/Columbia,
MD) each scored two goals to aid the Blue Hen effort. Megan
Bolster scored two goals and Liz Chambers added two assists
for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in
the first 15 minutes before the Hens battled back behind two
goals from Fortunato and one from Shuck to tie the score at
3-3 with 9:50 left in the first half. The score was tied
three more times in the opening half with Fortunato scoring
with 3:58 left to send the game into halftime tied at
5-5.
The Hens put the game away early in the
second half, scoring the first four goals of the second
stanza to go up 9-5 with 24:12 left. Rutgers cut the lead to
11-9 on a goal by Bolster with 5:59 left, but Christy
Buck (Mt. de Sales/Catonsville, MD) and O'Connell scored
goals 18 seconds apart a minute later to put the game
away.
Delaware outshot Rutgers 37-29 with
goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli (Haverford/Havertown,
PA) posting nine saves for the Hens.
