Fortunato, Second Half Flurry Leads Blue Hens Over Rutgers

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware scored the first four goals of the second half to break a 5-5 halftime tie and moved on to a 15-9 non-league women's lacrosse victory over Rutgers in the Blue Hens' home opener Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium.

Megan Fortunato (Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA) notched a game-high five goals and dished out an assist and sophomore Corinne Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD) scored a career-high three goals, including two during the first five minutes of the second half to lead the No. 14 ranked Blue Hens (2-0) to the victory. Rutgers, a 1999 NCAA Tournament participant, fell to 0-3 despite four goals from Jill Penrose.

The Blue Hens are now off to 2-0 start for the first time since starting out 4-0 in 1989.

Sarah Edwards (Moorestown, NJ Friends) and Kate O'Connell (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, MD) each scored two goals to aid the Blue Hen effort. Megan Bolster scored two goals and Liz Chambers added two assists for the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes before the Hens battled back behind two goals from Fortunato and one from Shuck to tie the score at 3-3 with 9:50 left in the first half. The score was tied three more times in the opening half with Fortunato scoring with 3:58 left to send the game into halftime tied at 5-5.

The Hens put the game away early in the second half, scoring the first four goals of the second stanza to go up 9-5 with 24:12 left. Rutgers cut the lead to 11-9 on a goal by Bolster with 5:59 left, but Christy Buck (Mt. de Sales/Catonsville, MD) and O'Connell scored goals 18 seconds apart a minute later to put the game away.

Delaware outshot Rutgers 37-29 with goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli (Haverford/Havertown, PA) posting nine saves for the Hens.
