Princeton Halts Blue Hens' 11-game Win Streak; Unbeaten Status

PRINCETON, NJ &endash; The University of Delaware's perfect season came to an abrupt halt Wednesday evening as No. 2 ranked Princeton outscored the 7th ranked Blue Hens 10-3 in the first half and cruised to a 17-5 non-league women's lacrosse victory at Princeton Stadium.

The Tigers, who won their seventh straight game to improve to 8-1, got six goals from Kim Smith and four more from Lauren Simone to down the Blue Hens for the 11th straight season.

The Blue Hens (8-1), the nation's lone remaining unbeaten NCAA Division I women's team entering the game, had an 11-game win streak snapped.

Delaware, off to its best start since the 1983 NCAA championship season, was held to just 15 shots on goals after entering the game ranked No. 2 in the nation with 16.13 goals per game.

Princeton entered as the nation's No. 2 defensive squad, surrendering just 6.38 goals per game.

Delaware top two scorers, senior Sarah Edwards (Friends/Moorestown, NJ) and Megan Fortunato (Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA), were both held without a goal although Edwards did dish out one assist. Edwards, who entered the game with 32 goals to rank fifth in the country, was held scoreless for the first time in 14 games since last season.

Sophomore Corinne Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD) led the Hens with three goals while Ashley Moderacki and Christy Buck each scored once. Charlotte Kenworthy and Sarah Small each contributed two goals apiece for the Tigers.

Princeton scored three quick goals in the first five minutes to go up 3-0, but the Hens countered on goals by Shuck and Moderacki to cut the lead to 3-2 with 23:16 left in the first half. But the Tigers came back to put the game away, scoring the next four goals and seven of the last eight of the half to take a 10-3 lead into intermission.

Princeton then scored the first six goals of the second half to go up 16-3 before Delaware finally stopped the run on Buck's goals with 2:48 left to play.

The Hens will resume play Saturday when they host 12th-ranked Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
