Edwards Scores Career-High Seven Goals to Lead Hens to 11th Straight Win

COLUMBUS, OH -- Senior Sarah Edwards (Friends/Moorestown, NJ) exploded for a career-high seven goals, including five in the second half, to lead the No. 9 ranked University of Delaware women's lacrosse squad to a 15-7 victory over No. 16 Penn State in non-league action Sunday at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

The Blue Hens, off to their best start since the 1983 NCAA title team started out 12-0, improved to 8-0 on the season and defeated the Nittany Lions (4-5) for the second time in three years but for just the fourth time in 21 all-time meetings. Delaware has now won 11 straight games since last season, the longest winning streak since the 1983 season.

Edwards, last week's America East Player of the Week and Inside Lacrosse national Player of the Week, hit for five or more goals for the third time this season and notched her 100th career goal when she scored with 16:19 left to give the Hens a 14-6 lead.

The CoSIDA Academic All-American candidate has now scored a goal in 14 straight games since last season and leads Delaware in scoring with 32 goals this season. She is just the 13th player in UD history to reach the 100-goal mark.

Senior co-captain Christy Buck (Mt. de Sales/Catonsville, MD) added three goals for the Blue Hens while Megan Fortunato (Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA) added two goals. Kate O'Connell (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, MD) and Katy Hahn (Harborfields/Centerport, NY) each had a goal and an assist.

B.J. Lucey and Julie Tice each scored two goals for Penn State while Colleen O'Hara scored a goal and dished out three assists.

Lucey scored two goals in the first 10 minutes to stake the Nittany Lions to a 2-1 lead, but the Blue Hens responded with five straight goals, two each from Buck and Edwards, to go up 6-2 with 12:49 left in the opening half.

Delaware took a 9-4 lead into halftime and led by at least five goals the rest of the way. Edwards scored three straight goals in a 12-minute span in the second half to put the Hens up 15-6.

Delaware, which has beaten opponents by an average of 7.8 goals per game this season, will look to tie the school record for consecutive wins Wednesday when it travels to No. 2 ranked Princeton.
