Hens Come Up Short in First NCAA Visit Since 1984

BALTIMORE -- The University of Delaware's first trip to the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament since 1984 was a short one Thursday afternoon as host Loyola got four goals each from Jen Testrake and Kory Miller and goalkeeper Tricia Dabrowski put in a brilliant performance in the nets on the way to a 14-4 victory at Curley Field.

The 12th ranked Blue Hens, who captured national titles in 1981-83 and was a third place finisher in 1984, capped an outstanding season with a record of 13-5. Fifth-ranked Loyola (15-4), the Colonial Athletic Association champion, earned a trip to the quarterfinals at No. 4 seed University of North Carolina Sunday in Chapel Hill, NC. The loss was just the second in nine NCAA post-season games for the Blue Hens.

Sarah Edwards

University of Delaware senior Sarah Edwards (Friends/Moorestown, NJ) capped her career with one goal and one assist while junior Megan Fortunato (Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA), junior Kate O'Connell (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, MD), and freshman Libby Pforr (Cold Spring Harbor/Lloyd Harbor, NY) each scored a goal. Edwards capped her career with 152 career points, including 111 goals. She and Fortunato shared the team lead in scoring with 56 points each this season.

Miller and Testrake led the way for the Greyhounds with four goals each with Miller adding an assist. Tracey Morlang also scored twice for Loyola and Krissy Warnock had a goal and an assist. The 5-2 Dabrowski dominated the game in goal, posting 16 saves and consistently stealing Blue Hen passes in front of the net. Loyola, which defeated the Blue Hens 9-8 back on April 22, downed the Hens for the sixth straight time and for the 14th time in the last 15 meetings.

Miller and Morlang each scored two goals each as Loyola jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Hens got on the board on a goal by Fortunato with 8:22 left before the half. After Loyola led 7-1 at halftime, the Hens scored the first goal of the second stanza on a score by Edwards to cut the lead to 7-2 with 27 minutes left. But Loyola countered with five straight goals, two by Testrake, to go up 12-2.

"Today we got beat by a very good team," said Delaware head coach Denise Wescott following the game. "We need to learn from this game. This was our first time here and we felt the pressure more than Loyola did. This was a great step by our program (to make it to NCAA play) and now we just have to work harder and come back more prepared. Loyola had better stick skills than us today and Dabrowski was a big difference in goal. She made some great saves."

"We just didn't create opportunities today," said Delaware senior co-captain Christy Buck, who started all 72 games during her career and made her first NCAA Tournament appearance. "This was really exciting for me today, to finally come here and play in an NCAA game. That was my goal when I came here to Delaware and I attained it. This is really special."
