Edwards' Late Goal Lifts Blue Hens to Upset of #2 James Madison

NEWARK, DE -- Senior Sarah Edwards (Friends/Moorestown, NJ) scored her career and game-high sixth goal of the game off a free position shot with 1:43 left to play to break the sixth tie of the game and lift the No. 12 ranked University of Delaware to a 14-13 upset victory over No. 2 ranked James Madison in a women's lacrosse top 20 showdown Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

The Blue Hens won their ninth straight game since last season and improved to 6-0 on the season, the best start for Delaware since the 1983 team opened up 12-0 on its way to the NCAA national title. The win was Delaware's first ever victory over a team ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation and first triumph over a top five ranked team since a 6-5 win over then No. 3 James Madison in 1995. The Blue Hens are also the first America East women's lacrosse team to defeat an opponent ranked as high as No. 2.

James Madison, which fought back from a 13-9 deficit with 10:35 left to play to tie the game at 13-13 with 2:57 remaining, suffered its first setback of the season to fall to 5-1. The Dukes have played a Top 20 ranked team in all six games this season.

Edwards, Delaware's leading goal scorer with 22 this season, led the way for the Hens with six goals and one assist while Kate O'Connell (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, MD) and Christy Buck (Mt. de Sales/Catonsville, MD) each scored twice. Megan Fortunato (Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA) added a goal and two assists.

James Madison got four goals from Jess Marion, including three straight that sparked the Dukes' second half comeback, while Amy Brew scored three times and Kristen Dinisio scored twice. Goalkeeper Jennifer Corradini posted 17 saves as the Hens outshot the Dukes 37-25.

The first half featured five ties before the Blue Hens scored the final four goals of the stanza to take an 8-6 lead into intermission. Delaware came out strong in the second half, scoring the first three goals to go up 11-6.

The Hens upped their lead to 12-7 with 16:24 left on a goal by Edwards but JMU came right back with two goals by Marion to pull to within 12-9 with 13:27. Fortunato's goal three minutes later put the Hens up 13-9, but it would be the last Delaware goal before Edwards' game-winner.

James Madison came storming back, scoring four straight goals from Marion, Mindy Leher, and two from Brew, who tied the score at 13-13 on a goal with 2:57 left to play. Edwards then scored the game-winner just 1:14 later. James Madison's McNevin Molloy's low shot from 25 yards out was stopped by Delaware goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli (Haverford/Havertown, PA) as the horn sounded.
