BETHLEHEM, PA -- The University of Delaware women place second and the Blue Hen men were seventh at the 16th annual John Covert Indoor Track and Field Classic at Lehigh University’s Rauch Fieldhouse Saturday.
Delaware athletes posted 41 top 10 finishes in the meet led by the women’s 4 x 800 meter relay (10:00.19), freshman Kristi Cox in the women’s 400 meters (59.54), and senior Asha Quant (at right) in the 200 meters (25.88).
Lehigh won the men’s team title with 162 points, edging runner-up East Stroudsburg with 109.4 points. Delaware was seventh with 36.4 points in the 10-team field. Sacred Heart won the women’s team title with 132 points, edging Delaware with 130 points in the 11-team field.
Posting runner-up finishes for the UD women were freshman Leah Putman in the long jump (18-1 1/4), junior Kelli McDonald in the pole vault (11-9 3/4), sophomore Kellyn Wright in the 800 meters (2:23.08), freshman Kayla Hennessy in the 200 meters (26.38) and 60 meter hurdles (9.05), and Quant in the 60 meters (7.87). Third place showings were put in by freshman Isabel Graf in the 5,000 meters (19:13.17), the 4 x 400 meter relay (4:04.93), Putman in the 60 meter hurdles (9.11), Karen Mandrachia in the mile (5:27.94), Stephanie Taylor in the 500 meters (1:24.21), and Cox in the 200 meters (26.45).
For the Delaware men, freshman John Viotto was second in the shot put (49-9), Chase Renoll was third in the shot put (48-3 1/2), freshman Nick Alexander was fourth in the shot put (48-3 1/2), Greg Stirparo was fourth in the weight throw (47-2 1/4), Brandon Swartout was fourth in the long jump (22 3/4), Jamie Igo was fourth in the high jump (5-10 3/4), and the 4 x 400 meter relay team was fourth in 3:35.01.
