Young Wins Shot Put, Marquez Sets 400m Record to Lead Delaware at New York University Fasttrack Invitational

NEW YORK -- Rachel Young (at right) was the lone University of Delaware individual champion with a victory in the women’s shot put and Cristine Marquez and Michelle Gomes set school records to lead the Blue Hen indoor track and field teams at the New York University Fasttrack Invitational Friday night at the New York City Armory.

Young posted her sixth individual championship of the season and 18th of her career as she threw the shot put 45-9 3/4 to lead the Blue Hen women, who posted 13 top 10 finishes. The Delaware men recorded eight top 10 finishes led by Kyle Schmid’s second place finish in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:55.12.

Marquez placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 56.33, breaking the previous UD record of 56.83 by Tyechia Smith in 2004 while Gomes was second in the 200 meters with a new school standard of 24.62, erasing the mark of 25.45 by current teammate Brittany Wright in 2005.

Also for the Delaware women, Amanda Marshall was second in the weight throw (52-3 3/4) and fourth in the shot put (44-0), Alexi Capsouras was second in the 60 meter hurdles with a career-best time of 9.03, Kelli McDonald was second in the pole vault (11-9 3.4), and the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Christina Antonopoulos, Kellyn Wright, Laura Heenan, and Yianna Antonopoulos was third in a time of 9:29. 77.

Schmid led the UD men with a career-best time of 14:56.12 for a second place finish, Conrad Rapp was third in the pole vault (14-9), Gregg Cantwell was third in the 3,000 meter with a career-best time of 8:28.11, and Matt Guida was fifth in the pole vault (14-3 1/4).
