BOSTON -- Ten members of the University of Delaware men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will be competing on the regional level this weekend as the Blue Hens take part in the annual Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes in America (IC4A) Championships.
Eight members of the Blue Hen women’s team will compete at the ECAC Championships March 3-4 at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston while two UD men’s standouts will be competing at the IC4A Championships at Boston University March 3-4. The meet will include the top NCAA Division I track and field performers on the East Coast.
On Friday, Delaware women’s standouts Michelle Gomes (at right) will compete in the 60 meter dash (1:25 p.m.) and 200meter dash (3:30 p.m.) events, Asha Quant will take part in the long jump (1:30 p.m.), Rachel Young will compete in the shot put (1:30 p.m.) Cristine Marquez will be in the field for the 400 meter dash title (2:20 p.m.), and Gomes and Marquez will be joined by Alexi Capsouras, Daniella Price, and Brittany Wright in the 4 x 400 meter relay (4:25 p.m.). On Saturday, Kelli McDonald will take part in the pole vault competition at 11 a.m.
For the Delaware men, Gregg Cantwell will run in the 3,000-meter race on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Jared Wasser will compete in the shot put on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
Five of the student-athlete will be competing at the championships for the second time in their careers while Brittany Wright will be competing for the third time. Wright was eighth in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 2004 and 10th in the 55 meters in 2005, Young was 15th in the shot put in 2006, Capsouras and Price were part of the 4 x 400 meter relay team that placed 26th in 2006, Cantwell was a member of the distance medley relay team that placed 16th in 2006, and Wasser was 19th in the shot put in 2006.
Young has won six meet shot put titles this season while McDonald has captured four meet titles in the pole vault this winter.
Unless any of the Delaware athletes’ times qualify for the upcoming NCAA Division I Championships March 9-10 at the University of Arkansas, the meet will be the final action of the year for both UD indoor track and field teams.
