University of Delaware Women’s Indoor Track and Field Team Finishes Second at Lehigh John Covert Classic

BETHLEHEM, PA -- The University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field team finished second with 106 points while the men were fifth with 61 points as the Blue Hens competed in the 14th Annual John Covert Classic hosted by Lehigh University Saturday afternoon.

The Lehigh women won their meet wiht 121.50 points followed by Delaware, Towson (100), Sacred Heart (95), Rider (89,50), Wagner (59), East Stroudsburg (51.50), La Salle (27), Richard Stockton (11.50), UMBC (11), Rowan (5), and Moravian (5). The Mountain Hawk men also won their meet with 166 points, ahead of Rider (103), Sacred Heart (70), East Stroudsburg (62), Delaware (61), Moravian (56), La Salle (53), UMBC (33), Wagner (27), Richard Stockton (26), Rowan (19), Monmouth (2), Elizabethtown (1).

The Delaware women were led by Paula Green, who won the 200 meter dash in 26.81 and finished third in the 60 meter dash in 7.98. Asha Quant placed second in the 60 meter dash in 7.97, in the 200 meter dash in 26.85, and in the long jump with a mark of 17’10.75”, while Daniella Price was second in the 400 meter dash in 1:02.50 and third in the 200 meter dash in 27.07.

Kelli McDonald was second in the pole vault with a mark of 10’11.75”, while Laura Heenan placed third in the 800 meter run in 2:27.66 and Julia Somers finished third in the 3000 meter run in 10:33.98. Alexi Capsouras was fourth in the 500 meter dash in 1:22.49 and fifth in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.34, while Brooke Maguire came in fourth in the 3000 meter run in 10:43.86 and Amy Miller was third in the pole vault with a mark of 10’0”. The Blue Hen 4x800 meter relay team was also fourth in its race in 10:16.28.

Charlie Williams paced the Blue Hen men by winning the 400 meter dash in 51.79 and finishing fifth in the 200 meter dash in 23.39. Tyler Mayforth placed second in the 3000 meter run in 9:01.46, while Steven Jackson was third in the 500 meter dash in 1:10.76 and Kyle Casella came in third in the weight throw with a toss of 49’4.25”.

Matt O’Brien finished fifth in the 5000 meter run in 16:09.77, while Chris Martens was also fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 13’9.25”. Doug Alpers placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 45’9.75”, while the Delaware 4x400 meter relay team finished fifth in its event in 3:39.92.

Both Delaware teams return to action next Friday and Saturday when they compete in the Collegiate Invitational at the New York City Armory.
